Look what the tide dragged in... 🌊💔 #SayNoToPlastic #ProjectAlaGALAan #SaveOurOcean
.
This is what dotted the shore area of the resort. Ironically, most of what was floating was a result of the products provided at the restaurants and rooms.
.
Tourists and visitors are also to blame. This resort does not sell bottled water any longer and encourages guests to bring their own refillable canteens. But even with their noble efforts, plastic bottles still manage to make it to their shores.
.
Switching from disposables to more sustainable and/or biodegradable packaging can make a huge impact on preventing this kind of marine pollution.

Sadly, most of what we found during our short hike were snack packages and drinks, indicative of tourists being the culprits. 😢🍬🍫🚬

🐳 BASIC RULES FOR OCEAN EXPLORATION:
.
• DO NOT TOUCH marine life. This includes corals and sea creatures as well as whale sharks, star fish and more.
.
• DO NOT FEED the fish. It disrupts the natural balance of the ecosystem.
.
• Corals are living creatures. They are not plants or rocks. Do not step on them. DO NOT BREAK off pieces. We must protect them at all costs.
.
• Do NOT stir up the silt at the bottom especially near coral reefs.
.
• Do NOT take home ocean souvenirs - including corals, star fish, sand, fish, etc.

🐚 OCEAN #ACIDIFICATION & CORAL BLEACHING
.
Since the industrial revolution, the ocean is estimated to have absorbed 25% of human CO2 emissions, leading to increased ocean acidity.
.
As the ocean becomes more acidic, the calcium carbonate that phytoplankton, coral reefs, and shellfish depend on becomes unavailable, putting many marine species at risk of dramatic losses or even extinction.
.
Ocean acidification impacts all species, weakening their feeding, respiration, and reproduction and leading to less productive, less diverse and less resilient ocean ecosystems.
.
Every action taken to meet the Paris Climate Change Agreement by reducing CO2 emissions to prevent climate change also contributes to slowing ocean acidification.

"Stars do not hear our wishes but people do....so hear our plea and stop this activity. Not only this activity endanger the environment but also gives people the notion that sending off lanterns in the sky is ok and good. What you are sending when you do this are not wishes but just pure thrash in the sky...as simple as that. There are tons of ways to celebrate your cause but not this.

•Say no to SINGLE-USE #PLASTIC and #disposables.
.
•About 80% of marine litter is land-based. A result of poor waste management and insufficient recycling and recovery.
.
•60-90% of marine litter is made of different plastic polymers and most of them are disposables that have only been used once.
.
•In 2015, the world produced 322 million tonnes of plastic (equivalent to 900 Empire State buildings).
.
•At least 8 million tonnes of the plastics produced leak into our oceans each year. That's like emptying a garbage truck into the ocean every minute.
.
•We produce 1 trillion plastic bags a year - that's 2 million every minute. Each bag with an average use time of just 12 minutes.
.
•By 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and an estimated 99% of seabirds will have ingested plastic.
.
•Plastic never decomposes. It just breaks down into tiny little pieces called #MICROPLASTICS - some not even visible to the naked eye. Much of marine life, both large and small, unknowingly ingest these microplastics. Humans that eat them as seafood, ultimately end up consuming the plastics as well.
.
•As many as 51 trillion microplastic particles - 500 times more than stars in our galaxy - litter our oceans, seriously threatening marine wildlife.
.
•Most of the air we breathe is from the ocean. Plankton, algae and seaweed generate more than half of the air we breathe.

Two months ago, I traded my life vest for fins and learned to entrust my life with it, a snorkeling gear, and one breath per dive to discover the underwater world of South Cebu. But instead of marine life, I found marine debris. There were cups, straws, junk food wrappers, ice cream tubs, plastic bags, and even sanitary napkins, specifically found in the waters of Lambug Beach, Badian and White Beach, Moalboal.
By 2050, plastics could outnumber fishes in the ocean if we keep using single-use plastics and if we don't stop treating our waters like a universal garbage can.
Time check: It's 2017 and the Philippines is the third producer of plastic waste in the world. It's alarming, but we can still save our waters (and the environment, in general) by starting with these five simple ways:
1. Dispose of waste properly;
2. Bring your own reusable cup/tumbler on trips;
3. Use an eco bag when you shop;
4. Get a food-grade stainless straw if you really can't drink without it (See Go Zero @gozeroph);
5. Stuff your trash in plastic bottles and help make eco-bricks (See The Plastic Solution @plasticsolutionph);
6. Treat the places you go to as the people you love. You never hurt and destruct them.

Repeat, master, add more solutions, and educate.

Like currents, time flows fast. Now is always the best time to be responsible stewards of our planet and to make sustainability a lifestyle. Remember: our collective efforts will go a long way. "I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody." -Lily Tomlin

Happy World Oceans Day! (and every day) 〰♡〰 #SayNoToPlastic #SayNo2Plastic #CoralTriangle #RefuseSingleUse #SaveOurOcean #WorldOceansDay #GlobalGoals #UsedOnceLastsForever #SavePHSeas #ProjectAlaGALAan

The month of May was declared as the #MonthoftheOcean . Exactly a week ago #ProjectAlaGALAan team conducted a two days lecture and workshop held at Hive Hotel, Quezon City (first day) and Dive & Trek Resort and Marine Sanctuary at Bauan, Batangas (second day) together with some notable speakers from different agencies, bloggers, outdoor enthusiast and co-influencers. Activities to be conducted in observance of the Month of the Ocean aims to highlight the importance and significance of conservation, protection, and sustainable management of Philippine coastal and marine resources.
.
The significance of the ocean to human well-being is undeniable, as millions of Filipinos depend on coral reefs and their associated ecosystems, providing food and livelihood to small-scale artisanal and subsistence fishers as well as commercial fishers. The ecosystems provide diverse and valuable functions and services, such as coastal protection, fisheries production, and regulation services as well as recreational, educational and aesthetic values, contributing significantly to the tourism sector as well (Padilla, 2009). Coral Reefs, and other ecosystems also improve the adaptive capacity of coastal communities against climate change as it dissipates wave energy and improves coastal stability. Moreover, the climate is being regulated by mangroves, planktons in water, and corals which take in CO2, reducing carbon in the atmosphere.

Thank you! Ms. Romina Lim and the rest of the team for choosing me as one of the participants. To more events like this.

Someday I'm gonna learn to enjoy the water without lifevest and with fins, to appreciate the corals and the deep blue sea without freaking out under it, without thinking thay they might sting or swallow the whole me. Someday. I know I'll be able to conquer that fear.

as beautiful as this setting sun in Bauan, i walked out of #ProjectAlaGALAan 2-day workshop with a renewed sense of personal responsibility to be a responsible traveler and an advocate on environmental conservation and sustainability. Life indeed has its own way of giving you valuable realizations.

According to Dame Ellen McArthur, by 2050, there could be more waste plastic than fish in the sea.
Unless we change our ways.

Avoid single-use plastic.

Home is where the sea is. 😊💙 #ProjectAlaGALAan #MigosaIho #MonthoftheOcean

We are all connected in this world, we came from the same particles that crafted the stars and the whole universe and it is our responsibility to protect every single organism in this planet, from the highest peak of our mountains to the deepest part of our oceans. Our 2 days workshop in #projectAlaGALAan is just the beginning of our journey to save the vanishing beauty of our earth. 🐠 🐠 🌎 🌎 🗻 🗻

This is Romina, the founder of Project AlaGALAan who spearheaded this environmental workshopi just attended and she is just 22 years old (tama ba Mina? hehehe..) yes...at such a young age....it made me question my effin self as to what have i been doing when i was her age....hahahaha...Ragnarok Online...to think i was still taking my undergraduate degree in BS Biology...a far contrast to this young lady.

Thank you is an understatement Mina for allowing me to be part of your engaging campaign. I am privileged to have attended the workshop and shared the whole experience together with all the like-minded participants who share the same passion in traveling and environmental preservation. I also wanted to extend my kudos to your team who have been pivotal to the success of this activity. Education must produce action as what Ana Oposa quoted in her talk and you can count on me in giving back and sharing what i learned from your successful workshop and be a living and breathing example of people who have high regard for environmental conservation and sustainability.

#ProjectAlaGALAan

Fascinated again with the water. It somehow gives me the feeling of comfort and awareness of the pre-existing community on and beneath its surface. Can't wait to share more 💙 🌊

As part of our final activity, we did snorkeling and diving at a Marine Sanctuary in Batangas. This image of a school of jacks was shot around less than 100 feet away from the shoreline. Can you believe that?

Seeing the underwater world up this close, a world that's so alive and healthy, it will leave you speechless. Just look at its beauty. And take note, this is just in Batangas! Now, imagine if everything looks like this. Wouldn't it be awesome?

I have learned a lot from the #ProjectAlaGalaan workshop but what really hit me hard is that their future lies on our hands. It's been said a million times already but it's really not yet too late to do our part. We have so many marine sanctuaries out there and they need our help. Conservation is not only about the marine environment but nature in general. Small acts like avoiding plastics can have a huge impact on our environment. We will never get tired of promoting the beauty of our world but it's time we do our share. Protect and conserve. Be an earth warrior.

with our celebrity guest speaker Ms. Antonette Taus. Her talk about environmental sustainability and how each of us can make a difference on our own was very inspiring and moving. I will surely remember her words of wisdom about environmental awareness and conservation. Such a fitting close for a successful project!
#ProjectAlaGALAan

Meeting you in person is one thing. But hearing your presentation and talking to you are two others things. Thank you for all that you've imparted with us, @thepoortraveler hope to meet the duo next time.
