500? 600? We already lost count but I’m pretty sure these cigarette butts are not lower than 500. (Plot twist: there were still some from the clean-up containers that were not stuffed in these bottles.) That’s again, taken in JUST a 300m beach stretch.
.
I hope this photo gives you the goosebumps we’ve experienced while picking these craps. I hope this made you uneasy and guilty. I hope you cringe. I hope that the next time you see someone smoking that is about to throw their ciggie filters in the beach, YOU’LL BE COURAGEOUS ENOUGH to smack that last piece back to their mouths. Kidding.

THE BEACH IS NOT AN ASHTRAY PART 3:
This is not to spread hate but to continuously educate. A beach clean-up of 250m in about 30mins has resulted to getting once again my favorite subject: CIGGIE FILTERS. No, this is not to point fingers and YES, this is just to encourage you to do any of the following:
1. Pick up rubbish, not just at the beach but mindfully doing it anywhere.
2. Just please quit smoking at the beach, dude! Philippine Executive Order 26, entitled “Providing for the Establishment of Smoke-Free Environments in Public and Enclosed Places” means that you may only smoke in “enclosed” area - being covered by a roof or any structure serving the purpose of a roof. Are there roofs when you swim? At the shore? In short, whatever your excuses are, there is no way you are spared from smoking at the beach. JUST. PLEASE. DO NOT.
3. Quit smoking if you must. What good is there in it anyway?
4. If you cannot do any of the three, please make a rebuttal as to why should you make the beach an ashtray. Who knows I might learn something from you?
.
.
.
Thank you!

coastal clean-up with the gang.. #projectalagalaan #masasagip @pauloapostadero

One of my ways to help the planet: baonan. One less plastic to worry about. #projectalagalaan

Back in summer, one of my afternoon rituals was to pick up trash at the beach in Liwliwa. It's really disappointing how people deliberately litter there and I, filled with massive love for that niche, would painstakingly clean their mess. It was so frustrating but I had to do it, WE HAD TO DO IT.
.
.
Having heard of this year's International Costal Clean-up, I took interest right away to attending one in LU. Unfortunately, a lot of things happened and I can't travel that far, I then joyfully volunteered to @wearecora's team to help out in LPPCHEA. .
.
To my surprise, @zrylism and Tine (siblings whom I met in Liwa that share the same eco love) were there too! We decided to be in one team and chose "PLASTICS" as our assignment.
.
.
The coast was filled with so much trash. Rather than frustration, I felt inspired realizing that more and more people are seeing the real problem with waste irresponsibility and plastic pollution. Folks from different ages, government and NGOs were there hand in hand cleaning and sharing their views, encouraging each other to fight the inconvenience of this drastic problem. .
.
Our 3-woman team picked up plastics for almost two hours mainly focusing on the smaller plastics since I know how more dangerous those are to be eaten by our marine friends. .
.
We then proceeded with the segregating and tallying of our trash. Man, that felt like we're being tortured! It was HARDER than the clean-up! I swear we almost gave up! 😩 If I remember it right, our straw count have reached a hundred, food packaging more than a thousand, 4 dead fish, 20+ bottle caps, 1 diaper, plenty of lolly sticks, some plastic toys, and a whole lot more!
.
.
Rather than anger, I feel more concerned now. I feel like I can do more to help out. My expectations to the event did not fail me, it only made me realize that there's so much things to do. I know many of us do not have the luxury of time to help in CU like this but I want you to know that you have the power. In simply REFUSING consumption of additional waste, you are already doing the Earth a great favor. YOU KNOW BETTER. YOU ARE WISER! #ProjectAlaGALAAN #weareCORA #ICC2017 #ICCNCR2017_LPPCHEA

Two of the purest souls that I know 💙💚 Thank you for inspiring us today in this year's International Coastal Clean-up, Ate Madz and Ate Toni. 💕 #ProjectCORA #ProjectAlaGALAan #SamaSamaParaSaManilaBay #ICCNCR2017_LPPCHEA

Always proud to be one of #ProjectAlaGALAan's kiddos 💚 continue spreading awareness, Minamylabs! Yes, it gets really frustrating sometimes but know that we're here to support you through crappy bashers and constant learners. Thank you for today! :) #AkyatCon2017

Representing @mountainwatchph today at AkyatCon 2.0 since @celineism is sick. Yes, getting out of seas talk (comfort zone) to learn more about conservation strategies and sustainability. I feel so different in here but still stoked to know more and hear what my idol @killtheminataur has to say about #ProjectAlaGALAan ✌🏽🤙🏽👊🏽 #AkyatCon2017

LOTSA THANKS, TEAM LNJ! Here's a photo of Jayson and Kuya @jeshuaitandsee assisting me while going downhill in Batangas. I think I already had 5 slides prior to this! Hahaha! I promise to finish the trek next month, guys! I'll make it up to you. Hihi

Thank you, Mr. LNT for this photo :) #ProjectAlaGALAan

"What lies beneath..." This is not just any other sunset picture.
Beneath the calm pristine waters of Trek and Dive in Batangas, is my first education on the balance between tourism and conservation.
Fun and responsibility.
Revenue and giving back.

Thank you @killtheminataur for organizing and spearheading #ProjectAlaGALAan last May!

Thank you @yoshke @antoinettetaus @savephseas and all those who shared their time, passion and knowledge.

🐳 BASIC RULES FOR OCEAN EXPLORATION:
.
• DO NOT TOUCH marine life. This includes corals and sea creatures as well as whale sharks, star fish and more.
.
• DO NOT FEED the fish. It disrupts the natural balance of the ecosystem.
.
• Corals are living creatures. They are not plants or rocks. Do not step on them. DO NOT BREAK off pieces. We must protect them at all costs.
.
• Do NOT stir up the silt at the bottom especially near coral reefs.
.
• Do NOT take home ocean souvenirs - including corals, star fish, sand, fish, etc.

🐚 OCEAN #ACIDIFICATION & CORAL BLEACHING
.
Since the industrial revolution, the ocean is estimated to have absorbed 25% of human CO2 emissions, leading to increased ocean acidity.
.
As the ocean becomes more acidic, the calcium carbonate that phytoplankton, coral reefs, and shellfish depend on becomes unavailable, putting many marine species at risk of dramatic losses or even extinction.
.
Ocean acidification impacts all species, weakening their feeding, respiration, and reproduction and leading to less productive, less diverse and less resilient ocean ecosystems.
.
Every action taken to meet the Paris Climate Change Agreement by reducing CO2 emissions to prevent climate change also contributes to slowing ocean acidification.

"Stars do not hear our wishes but people do....so hear our plea and stop this activity. Not only this activity endanger the environment but also gives people the notion that sending off lanterns in the sky is ok and good. What you are sending when you do this are not wishes but just pure thrash in the sky...as simple as that. There are tons of ways to celebrate your cause but not this.

When you wish upon a star, you need not to litter. Know that human fascination should never compromise the environment. .

Mountain Watch Philippines, together with Project Alagalaan, condemns Ilocos Heritage Tour's "Silaw 4.0" – a sky lantern-releasing event.

Releasing sky lanterns may look like a scene from Tangled, but we are not in a Disney movie. This is the real world, and the truth is this activity will only harm the environment. Share this to your friends and be informed! #AyawSaSilaw

KEY POINTS:
.
•Say no to SINGLE-USE #PLASTIC and #disposables.
.
•About 80% of marine litter is land-based. A result of poor waste management and insufficient recycling and recovery.
.
•60-90% of marine litter is made of different plastic polymers and most of them are disposables that have only been used once.
.
•In 2015, the world produced 322 million tonnes of plastic (equivalent to 900 Empire State buildings).
.
•At least 8 million tonnes of the plastics produced leak into our oceans each year. That's like emptying a garbage truck into the ocean every minute.
.
•We produce 1 trillion plastic bags a year - that's 2 million every minute. Each bag with an average use time of just 12 minutes.
.
•By 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and an estimated 99% of seabirds will have ingested plastic.
.
•Plastic never decomposes. It just breaks down into tiny little pieces called #MICROPLASTICS - some not even visible to the naked eye. Much of marine life, both large and small, unknowingly ingest these microplastics. Humans that eat them as seafood, ultimately end up consuming the plastics as well.
.
•As many as 51 trillion microplastic particles - 500 times more than stars in our galaxy - litter our oceans, seriously threatening marine wildlife.
.
•Most of the air we breathe is from the ocean. Plankton, algae and seaweed generate more than half of the air we breathe.
