In the build up to the launch of 'Topspin', we're going to be gradually introducing you to one instrument a week that was used on the recording. Some you'll know from our live shows, others are a little less familiar.
First up, meet Dino, Laura's violin.
Named after Laura's favourite crooner, Dean Martin, Dino says inside that he's Italian (Gio Batta Castelli, Fecit Genua, 1736) but it's more probable that he's English. He may be roughly the age he says he is, in parts at least, but who knows really! Laura fell in love at first sight when she spotted him across a crowded room full of violins at the Gardiner Houlgate auction house where she was accompanying Charlotte to look at a Gibson L5 guitar which, predictably, went for more than Charlotte could afford. Despite the many old repaired woodworm runs, cracks, sunken top and the fact that he sounded absolutely terrible, Laura somehow found herself back at the auction house two days later waving a number in the air... It took a year or so of playing and several experiments with different strings (turns out he loves Thomastik Roby Lakatos signature strings) before he started to open out, but he's gradually turning into a really lovely instrument. His small scale (closer to 7/8ths than full size) makes him a great instrument for someone with small hands plus Laura's had him for nearly 3 years now and he still hasn't imploded - perfect!
