So incredibly simple in terms of ingredients but also a great example of clever breaking down & pre-digesting cooking processes which abound in India & Ayurvedic guidance to make food more available - pulses hulled & split into dal, dal soaked overnight & thrice rinsed, spices to promote digestion, a little tomato added to further soften the skins, muddled with a masher once soft to break down further & for that amazing creaminess - long fermented bread with wild yeast breaks down the gluten (usually circumvented in commercial baking) for better digestion - & all the stirring, smelling & salivating marks your own predigestion processes; your body preparing for a meal - all the reasons to be involved & to savour the process - final step - enjoy! Be present, eat slowly in the sunshine & be still - deliciousness & intention are crucial ingredients - munch a few fennel seeds after to seal the deal.

This is pretty scary. I just watched 'processed food: what are we eating' and I thought it showed some interesting information. So much of what eat now is processed and people are eating "foods" that have been so processed that they are hardly still food. We eat the most processed food in Western Europe and it's no coincidence that we are also the most obese. Hopefully programmes like this will make people think again.

I teach the qualification for personal trainers to become nutritional advisors and I also focus on personal training for obese clients. I teach both how important it is to reduce the amount of processed food we eat and increase the amount of whole foods. I believe this is one of the best choices you can make for your health and weight.
A lot of food labelling and advertising is designed to fool us into believing we are making good choices but that is rarely the case. Look at the ingredients- is it real food?! Even better buy food that is so obviously food it doesn't need an ingredients label!
Look at your shopping trolley on your next supermarket trip and aim for 80% (or more!) to be unprocessed. Your body will thank you.
