Phong Nha is surrounded by caves. During the 'American/Vietnam' War these caves played a vital role for the North soldiers.
Not only where the caves large enough and deep enough to provide shelter for the many soldiers, they were also used as hidden hospitals. These caves were ideally situated along the Ho Chi Minh Trail giving a resting place for soldiers hiking from the North to the South (a good 3-4 month hike). Once the American Army learned of these hidden caves, they sent B-52 bombers and bombed the whole area. The idea was to cause the caves to collapse. They were unsuccessful, and instead damaged a good bit of the surrounding area.
The country is pretty well recovered from the war, but every once in a while you get small reminders such as this abandoned building.
