"Today, we walked into court, ready to speak our truth and participate. We were prepared to go forth and voice what happened in the Restorative Justice process. Just like the restorative justice session, we came ready to participate. But, representatives of the state continuously show that they are incompetent and incapable of fulfilling their duties. The only skill they have been able to show, is the ability to use any and every measure possible to silence black voices.
We were met with a judge that had preconceived notions of what the movement for black lives means for us as a group and as individuals. He was relying on outside information, revealed his obvious bias, and that resulted in a motion made by a lawyer for the judge to recuse himself and he immediately complied. This is unprecedented. To judge Fritzsche we would say, the generalizations made in the courtroom showed that your understanding of the black experience is infantile & violent. Your inablity to hear about our lives from our mouths is shameful.
After being subjected to continuously hearing the DA and the PD chief slander us in the press and rely on caricatures about individuals who engage in civil disobedience, we consider this a victory.
As far as we are concerned, today is a testament to our resilience and furthers our resolve to continue to fight for black lives, make sure our voices are heard and normalize participation in direct action in response to state sanctioned violence and white supremacy.
Today and everyday we affirm that black lives matter.
It is our duty to fight for our freedom
It is our duty to Win
We must love and support each other
We have nothing to lose but our chains" - #BLMPortland16, Portland Racial Justice Congress
