Prince of Pride. Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, heir apparent to the throne of Rajpipla in western Gujarat, opens his palace doors to the vulnerable lgbt community in India.
“People still face a lot of pressure from their families when they come out, being forced to marry, or thrown out of their homes. They often have nowhere to go, no means to support themselves," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
So the prince, 52, is building a center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) on the grounds of his ancestral palace.
A princely offering to the community. And he dresses quite spectacularly.

Manvendra Singh Gohil, India’s only openly gay prince, announced this week that he’s turning his palace into a center for vulnerable LGBTQ people. Prince Manvendra, who was disowned by his parents after he came out in 2006, said the 15-acre palace grounds will provide housing, medical care and job training for LGBTQ people, many who may have been disowned by their families themselves.
.
“People still face a lot of pressure from their families when they come out, being forced to marry, or thrown out of their homes. They often have nowhere to go, no means to support themselves,” Prince Manvendra told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
.
The news comes the same week that India’s Supreme Court announced that it’s going to review Section 377, a colonial-era law that criminalizes gay sex. Prince Manvendra has been a vocal critic of the law, and an advocate for LGBTQ rights around the world. “no We won’t win this fight if I corner myself to a national level,” he told the International Business Times this week. “This has to be global.”
.
Extensive evidence shows that same-sex romances were a part of life in many cultures of the Indian subcontinent before colonization. But in 1860, the British colonial government created a law to ban everything it viewed as “unacceptable carnal desire”—which included any sex that wasn’t for the purpose of procreation. Since that’s hard to police, the law eventually came to focus mainly on criminalizing same-sex relations. This law, Section 377, became the model for anti-gay laws throughout the British Empire. Most countries that still have anti-gay laws, from Jamaica to Uganda to Malaysia, are former British colonies.
