Good afternoon, dear followers. We continue our stories about new staff members. Please welcome our Primary teacher – Ms Jayne Starkie.
“I qualified as a primary teacher specialising in Primary Drama back in 2006. Since then I have taught in the UK, Qatar and now Kazakhstan. I took a break from teaching for a while when my two children were younger. During that time I gained a TEFL qualification and set up a playgroup for children aged 0-3 years. Although I am no longer running the playgroup, it does still exist and is bringing happiness to the lives of many children (and their mums!) in Mesaieed, Qatar.
Although a part of my heart will always be in the Middle East, it was time to move on. We began looking at international schools across the globe. We didn’t know where our journey would take us, only that we wanted to move away from the sand and the heat of Qatar. We started to look at schools, not places, and when we came across the vacancy for Haileybury Almaty and researched the school we knew that it was something we wanted to be a part of. But where was Kazakhstan!? It didn’t matter to us - it looked like it would be an amazing place to work, and a fantastic opportunity for our children. Thankfully the school was as impressed with us as we were with them - and so here we are!
We moved to Almaty in August 2016. We have settled in as though we have been here forever. I have made some amazing friends, I wake up every day to a view of the mountains, and we are experiencing different weather conditions that we have previously only dreamed about (there isn’t much snow in Qatar!). Every day is an adventure and I am thrilled to be living in a country that is such an undiscovered gem. I hope that I will be happy here for many years to come.
You can find me in Year 1 – I’ll be the one clicking away at the keyboard. Everyone comments on my ridiculously fast typing! Come along and say hello to me if you’ve not already met me!”
