I'm all about eating seasonally, and am absolutely hanging out for these prickly pears in the next few months!
In Australia these plants are considered a pest as they're highly invasive, and were actually used as natural fencing back in the day. They quickly spread over millions of hectares as they're a very hardy plant that's able to survive with little water. Big problem! So a moth was introduced to get the plant under control, and now the plant is restricted in some areas of Australia.
Prickly pears are a popular fruit in southern Mediterranean areas and Central America, and come into season late summer. The fruit takes a fair bit of effort to get to- you need to first get it off the plant without getting pricked, then brush all the spines off, then cut its thick skin to get to the tasty flesh inside. If you manage all that without copping a spine in your hands- well done! I then like to put the fruit in the fridge for a bit to chill before devouring 😋
Which fruits are you looking forward to this summer?
