1 John 4:19- "We love because he first loved us"
Alot of people talk about the importance of good works. When I was a child, there were quite a few people who would say "If you do this then God won't love you". Did this discipline me? Yes, of course it did. As a kid, I was scared, I didn't want God to hate me. But is this the truth? No, it's not.
Brothers and sisters, we need to be careful in the reasons why we do good works. Is it to gain the attention of our God? Is it so that he can love us? No, it shouldn't be. For Ephesians 2:8-9 says "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast". If we believe that Jesus Christ is our saviour and that he sacrificed himself on the cross for us, we are then saved. God loves everyone and has always loved everyone since the moment he created the earth, before we even knew of Him.
So then what is the point of good works? If God loves us and if we are saved and receive salvation then what is the point of good works? Why can't we go and commit sinful behaviour?
We do good works because we love God. It is our response to his love and our love for him. For instance, let's say there's this woman who is married to this man. Now the women doesn't want to cheat on the man because she loves him, not because she wants him to love her. Or another example is when someone you love is sick. You're not helping this person so that they can love you, but you because you genuinely love and care for them. That is how a relationship with God works. Because of His love and because I love him, I will not steal, I will not disobey, I'll try to resist every urge in my body from falling into the temptation of sinning.
When we do good works, it is for the glory of God. To show his greatness and love, so that people will come to know Jesus. "Is a person who loves Jesus and reads the bible vs a person who doesn't know Jesus and reads the bible the same?" No as one has purpose and the other does not. Jesus is our purpose and his love is the fuel and energy that will help us spread and show the glory of God.
All the glory to God †
