Listen to your own #heartbeat 💓 inside the heart of one of my most favorite artists 😳💓 .
.
Coeur (Hearts, 2017), Christian Boltanski
.
.
In 2005, out of fear for approaching death, Christian Boltanski started to take the sound of heartbeats as his artistic medium. He recorded his own heartbeats, describing individual heartbeats as “little memory”, Boltanski said such memory is “what makes us unique, is extremely fragile, and it disappears with death”. .
.
Since 2005, Boltanski started “The Archives of Hearts” (Les Archives du Coeur, 2005-), collecting heartbeats from all parts of the world. Heartbeats of nearly 120,000 people are permanently preserved on Japan’s Teshima Island. “Coeur”, (Hearts, 2017), is the recording of the artist’s own heartbeat connected to a light bulb that beats at the same pace. During “Christian Boltanski: Storage Memory” exhibition in Power Station of Art in Shanghai (PSA) in April to July this year, it was placed inside the chimney of PSA, the amplified heartbeats represent the soul of this place & evoked the sound of an enormous machine. To me the chimney is more of a symbol of the Crematoria & Gas Chambers at Nazi concentration camp, which was the history that determined the artist Boltanski has become. The contrast between the Death (burning the dead bodies) & Life (heartbeats) gives another layer to the meaning of this work. .

Many of the big museums in China tend to have exhibitions with famous names but poorly curated. Power Station of Art keep a constant good standard of curation, has become my most favourite museum in Shanghai.
