This photo is of a week old baby turkey (poult) rescued from a California turkey farm in 2011. He was the victim of laser debeaking. You can see a clear line on his beak. His beak was necrotic and once the tissue was completely dead, the whitish/yellow part of his beak fell off, a few painful days later. I can't even begin to imagine how painful this was. He also had a laser used on his toes and the top digit of each toe fell off once the tissue was completely dead, also a few painful days later. But, he was lucky to have been rescued and live out his life at a sanctuary. Unlike the 46 million turkeys that are killed each year for #Thanksgiving. Had he not been rescued, he would have suffered a brutal slaughter just a few months later. Just a baby. That is, if he survived that long. They're bred to grow so big, so fast, their poor hearts (and limbs) can't handle it. This photo is a constant reminder of why I'm vegan.
