A stacked trio of bowls from my most recent firing, each has practically the same glaze applied, only single percentages of red iron oxide alter the colour from piece to piece. These are some of the better ones but it’s been hit and miss with these over the last handful of firings, more than I would have liked fired cooler than I would have liked so in my final kiln load that I unpacked today I sneaked in a low shelf of refires, hopefully a second dose of heat will sort them out.
Pottery often yields results that are unexpected or poor, it’s a strange sensation and one more noticeable when stepping out of the electric fired realm. The flames path even in a simple gas kiln, combined with the shelf and pot arrangement can leave certain areas that simply don’t get as hot as they need. You can make dozens of pots that in their bisque fired state are wonderful, they encapsulate everything you intend and the firing takes that are goes against it. I shouldn’t be complaining about it, I’ve had a relatively low about of seconds these past firings, but it’s still noticeable, especially when a pot you really liked is picked out from the shelves only to leave you underwhelmed.
Comparatively the best pots are equally rare, there are lots that are passable but there’s always a few particular bowls that are nicer than the rest, a combination of form, glaze firing and unexpected results such as a blossom of iron or encircling ring of carbon that follows the rim. After experiencing soda firing and the extreme ups and downs that go alongside it I feel I’ve become far appreciative for those few that are exceptional, even if what makes it so is as subtle as a slight blush of darker glaze or a particularly vibrant kaki rim.
