One of my second grade students discovered this beautiful potter wasp with cobalt blue wings climbing on the balance beam. Potter wasps in the genus Eumenes often have eye-catching abdominal forms. They build exquisite potlike nests out of mud in which they lay an egg and pack the pot with paralyzed caterpillars. Once I found three little pots lined up on a cedar twig near my house. It was as exciting as seeing the famous pottery of Seagrove in Randolph County, NC. #potterwasp #hymenoptera #eumenes #friendsschoolofwilmington #schoolgroundnature #animalarchitects

Look what I found this morning as I hung out with my plant friends!! An itty bitty clay pot! Haha. It is a solitary wasp nest, nicknamed the "potter wasp". Kind of perfect. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ #potterwasp

The male potter wasp can be identified by the hooked tips of their antennae and their white face (see photo #4). #potterwasp #Eumenesfraternus #asteraceae #aster #asterofsomekind

Potter wasp/mason wasp (Eumeninae). The spiders are paralyzed and stored as food for the larvae. Scroll for pictures of the different stages. See if you can spot the tiny larvae attached to one of the spiders on the first pic. .

Mason or Potter Wasps (Symmorphus spp.) are welcome visitors to the garden. Adult females lay solitary eggs in holes in wood or the abandoned nests of springtime ground dwelling bees - Like Colletes, the Polyester Bee that we talked about last spring. They then capture a (typically destructive) leaf mining insect, paralyze it, and deposit it with the egg for the larvae to feed on when it hatches. Adults feed on nectar. This one is on Eurybia divaricata (White Wood Aster), which should give you a sense of scale: Less than half an inch. So, obviously these little guys are too tiny to make much of a visual impact in the garden. But clearly they are worth having around for their police work, and as alternative pollinators. And this should give you pause to think about what happens when you use insecticides in your garden: You may end up killing the unwanted offender. But you also end up doing a lot of collateral damage. I guess there are situations where it is inavoidable. But the other option is for all of us to begin training ourselves to accept that gardens are a facsimile of nature, and nature is never perfect. Opportunism, on the other hand, is the driving force in natural selection. Time and again in this garden, where I have used no chemicals, I have discovered beneficial insects like this one -who showed up to take advantage of the things I provided for them, and returned the favor by doing a little bit to make my life easier. #symmorphus #potterwasp #bringingnaturehome
