We love this beautiful portrait miniature by John Smart, one of Britain’s leading miniature painters of the Regency period.
Known for having a very meticulous approach to painting, Smart always aimed to create a photographic likeness of the people he painted.

How I love this! Perfect for #BlueMonday and #MiniatureMonday. Because it's going to be such a hot day, I'm also drawn to how serenely cool this elegant nymph with Gibson-girl hair appears....@repost from @elleshushanRevival Miniatures - unlike anything that came before. The most distinctive - Boston artist Laura Coombs Hills (1859-1952). A self-taught miniaturist of shimmering talent, Hills was a founder member of the American Society of Miniature Painters, executing over 300 portraits during her career. 'The Nymph' is one of the many extraordinary Hills in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. @mfaboston

For #BlueMonday and #MiniatureMonday - a lovely, delicate portrait of a duchess with a turbulent life dominated by her husband's scandals....@repost via @elleshushan

Daughter of the Earl of Galloway, Lady Susan Stewart was one of 16 children. A girl without a dowry. George Spencer-Churchill, Marquess of Blandford - soon to be the 5th Duke of Marlborough - described as "foolish, extravagant and inconsistent," was a spendthrift even as a child. His mother begged him to marry money; instead he married Lady Susan. They quickly had 6 children, but the union was never happy. In 1801 the Duke's relationship with the married Mary Ann Stuart became a very public court case, vaulting the sordid affair to scandal of the year. The long-suffering Duchess persevered. But then the Duke moved his latest fling, Matilda Glover, 35 years younger, into the Palace. The Duchess high-tailed it to London where she stoically raised their 6 children, while Matilda, acting as mistress of Blenheim, rapidly provided the Duke 6 more. At the end, having dissipated the Marlborough fortune, the Duke tried to leave the family jewels to Matilda. But the Duchess prevailed one last time. She outlived the Duke by one year.
Miniature circa 1795 by the Duke's favorite artist, Richard Cosway - a serial philanderer himself. #PortraitMiniature #PortraitMiniatures #MiniaturePortrait #BritishPortrait #BritishMiniature #HistoricArt #elleshushan #gorgeousgeorgians #britishart #duchess #art #arthistory #historyofart #britishartists #JewelryWithAFace #GeorgianJewelry #GeorgianJewellery #BlenheimPalace #SusanDuchessofMarborough #DuchessofMarlborough #RichardCosway

When miniaturist Joseph Wood died in 1830, a Washington, DC newpaper trumpeted “Death of a Man of Genius,” but shortly thereafter a temperance tract based on his infamously dissolute life was a best-seller. Twenty years earlier, at the height of his artistic powers, Wood painted this swoon-worthy self-portrait. Now a star of The Met’s American Wing. #NationalSelfieDay #MetAmericanWing

This lovely portrait of a Georgian maiden recently converted to a ring is available for purchase. Under loupe inspection, every split pearl seems to have resided in the frame since circa 1820. How exciting is that?! Ahhh...the little things in life. Silver and 9ct gold frame on a 14k gold band, size 5. DM for sales.

The Princess wore trousers, took snuff, lived with her cranky father his entire life, and, for 50 years, carried a torch for the woman-hating Frederick the Great. Unsurprisingly - she was a spinster. Amelia Sophia was the second daughter of George II, born at a time when royal princesses were little more than political pawns. At a very young age, Amelia was betrothed to her cousin, Frederick the Great of Prussia. But after years of corresponding, Frederick’s father found him a more adventageous bride, dissolving the engagement. Suddenly single, Amelia managed to cause endless scandal with a series of very public affairs - the Duke of Newcastle, the Duke of Grafton, and most probably a commoner named Thomas Arnold by whom she was widely rumored to have had a child - the composer Samuel Arnold. Amelia spent her happy spinsterhood serving as hostess for her also unmarried brother, William, Duke of (“Butcher”) Cumberland. Outliving the rest of her family, she died in 1786, only weeks after Frederick the Great, the love she never met. While being prepared for her funeral, Amelia was found to be wearing Frederick’s miniature. .

By Christian Friedrich Zincke, in enamel, circa 1730. Amelia was a great patron of Zincke, amassing a large collection of his miniatures, all of which are still in The Royal Collection.

NEW TO THE GALLERY…
These miniatures, unusual in remaining together as a pair, showcase Jeremiah Meyer’s formidable skill as a miniaturist in the later 18th century. Born in Germany and moving to England at an early age, Jeremiah Meyer’s early training was with the enamellist Christian Friedrich Zincke and he was one of the first miniaturists to really exploit the medium of ivory, using transparent washes to allow the delicate tones of the ivory to show luminescent through the paint. Here, the sitter’s skin tones are enhanced by the ivory support, which is equally sympathetic, under Meyer’s confident hand, to the thicker gouache used to describe the sitter’s silk dress and her husband’s elaborately patterned waistcoat. The lilac colour of the female’s sitter’s dress was a particular favourite for Meyer and had been used for the dress in his 1772 portrait of Queen Charlotte [Royal Collection RCIN 420000]. #jeremiahmeyer #portraitminiatures #portraits #portraitpair #husbandandwife #meyer #fineportraits #distinguished #manandwife #miniatures #forsale
