Mediterranean Sea Region, by Paoplo Forlani, 1569

“This portolan chart by the prominent Italian cartographer and engraver Paolo Forlani is the first sea chart engraved and printed on copperplate. Forlani was born in Verona but flourished in Venice in 1560–74. Most of his maps appeared under the imprint of other publishers, including Giovanni Francesco Camocio, Ferrando Bertelli, and Bolognini Zaltieri in Venice and Claudio Duchetti in Rome―members of the Lafreri school of cartography, some of whose printing plates were still used well into the 17th century. Nominally a map of the Mediterranean Sea region, the map extends as far west as Ireland and north to much of Russia and the Black Sea (labeled as Mare Maggiore).

“The word portolan derives from portolano, meaning “related to ports or harbors.” Portolan charts were often simple coastal outlines used in navigation with few, if any, inland features shown. The straight lines crisscrossing the chart represent the 32 directions, or headings, of the mariner’s compass from a given point. Coastal place-names are written on the land side of the coastline so as not to obscure possible maritime dangers. Areas of political control are indicated by different colors along the coastline and in some cases by shading of the interior.”

I had an opportunity to see this Portolan or portulan chart, navigational maps based on compass directions and estimated distances observed by the pilots at sea, at the University of Minnesota. They were first made in the 13th century in Italy, and later in Spain and Portugal, with later 15th and 16th century charts noted for their cartographic accuracy. This chart was made in the 17th century, in Genova, and maps the Mediterranean Sea.

Who would have thought to find a #fairytale #castle in one of the finest examples of #portuguese #mapping dated to 1558. The Queen Mary Atlas was created by Diogo Homem, who was from a family of cartographers, originally intended as a gift for King Phillip of Spain by his wife, Queen Mary of England. During this time England's map making activities largely relied on foreign cartographers. Very few national treasures remain from the short and unpopular #reign of #catholic Mary I, so this vivid volume of #portolan #charts is a marvel.

In honor of our new exhibit, "Manuscript Maps: Hand-Drawn Treasures of the Harvard Map Collection," opening TONIGHT, we decided to feature this portolan chart from 1620 by Salvator Oliva. It shows the #Mediterranean, while emphasizing the coasts and ignoring the interior. Come to Pusey library in Harvard Yard 5:30-7 to take in the gorgeous details on the vellum for yourself: blue made with lapis lazuli, orange with toasted lead, and gold. We hope to see you there! 🗺 #iglibraries #harvardlibrary #librariesofinstagram #portolan #maps #manuscripts

Portolan chart, manuscript map on parchment, unknown author, probably 16th century (very unlikely from Normandy, rather Portugal ?). You can see here Italy, Corsica and a part of France. The man painted on the right is the Duke of Savoy. Portolan Charts are navigational maps based on compass directions which provided the main navigation aids between the seaports of the world from the 14th to the early 17th centuries. The word portolan comes from the Italian adjective portolano, meaning "related to ports or harbours". Important harbours are written in red ink, the rest in black, always parallel to the coast.

This #MapMonsterMonday, we're sharing a #portolan chart featuring a Florida-sized sea monster with a serious 'tude. Also featured: a fabulous compass, some seriously wacky waterways, and a very lovely scale.

Portolan charts--also known as portolanos--are navigational charts characterized by #rhumblines radiating from compass points, and were used by sea captains to lay courses from one port to another. Because most of these charts were intended to be used at sea (and not in a nobleman's dry and cozy library) very few survive to this day. This particular chart was produced as part of a small atlas by Augustin Roussin, who likely produced it on commission for a wealthy patron. --

We're late to the #boatsinthelibrary party, but here we are! From the sixteenth-century Kitab-i Bahriyye (Book of Navigation), we can see here the chart for the "Castle Called Moya in the Gulf of Venice:" that is, #Muggia on the north east coast of Italy just south of Trieste. This page comes from a modern facsimile edition of the manuscript copy of Piri Reis' Kitab-i Bahriyye held in the Topkapi Palace Museum Library in Istanbul. Piri Reis was an Ottoman cartographer who produced this book of navigation that combined Islamic poetry, ethnographic description, and sailing charts modeled after European, medieval #Portolan charts. Unlike European Portolan charts, which tended to be on single pieces of vellum that depicted the whole of the Mediterranean crammed with toponyms along the coast, Piri Reis' book went page by page along the coast with these finally made illustrations and accompanying text. Two versions of the Kitab-i Bahriyye now exist in about 30-40 copies across the world. The first was written in 1521 and contained 130 chapters. These copies tend to be more roughly used and probably spent much of their early lives on the sea. The second was written in 1526 and was expanded to 210 chapters. This edition tended to have more lavish illustrations that survive in better condition, suggesting this version was less often used at sea. In all its surviving forms, Piri Reis' Kitab-i Bahriyye is one of the best surviving cartographic documents illustrating the relationship between Europe states, Northern Africa, and the #Ottoman empire on the #Mediterranean. #map #chart #navigation

Venetian monk #FraMauro's 'Map of the World' (mappa mundi) is an important early #cartographic milestone in the western world, and one of the first of its kind to show the existence of #Japan and #Java ~~~ the full #map is an incredibly detailed time capsule of European knowledge of the world in the mid-1440s, when the existence the Americas and Australia were as yet unknown. ~~~ there is a little inscription on the southern tip of Africa stating “qui comenza el mar scuro” or “here begins the dark #sea,” a hint to the data paucity of Fra Mauro and other 15th century mapmakers.

The #map operates at multiple scales at once & shows rivers, mountains, and major cities, religious symbols, #portolan charts, views of the pyramids, strange wagons and ships, individual trees, and #waves in the #ocean ~~~ everything is accompanied by little stories written by Mauro explaining his information and exactly why it should be trusted ~~~ cartography in the Middle Ages was wildly inaccurate and the size of land was often drawn to suit the audience the map was being made for ~~~ #seamonsters dramatically indicated all things unknown, even this little hidden guy shown lurking off the coast of Italy ~~~~ #oceanspace
