USS Nevada off Cherbourg in Northern France, apparently on 25 June 1944 according to most sources. The photo was taken aboard the E-class light cruiser HMS Enterprise (D52). The 2-pdr pom-pom gun in the lower portion of the frame looks like a Mark VII quad mount. Nevada is wearing Measure 22; this is one of my favorite pictures.
HMS Enterprise served in the vicinity of Caen to the Southeast of the Cotentin Peninsula at least until 17 June. Nevada was also active bombarding German positions in the area up until the 17th, though I haven't found record of the two ships operating together at that time, nor have I determined what Enterprise was up to in the last weeks of June. The date given for the photo was the last day Nevada would engage targets in Northern France. Over the previous three weeks, she bombarded shore installations and artillery at Cherbourg, and fired over a dozen miles inland on German troop concentrations.
