A total of 170 odorant receptor genes have been found in the bee genome sequence. That's huge!
They employ olfaction for locating flowers as well for social communication. A foraging worker bee encounters a crazy array of flower odors to choose from, yet is able to discriminate between them using subtle olfactory signals.
