This is why I will never advocate for socialism. Right now, I'm going to school to be a lawyer. In my state, you can complete an AA during your last two years of high school using the funds that would normally be paid to your high school, so I'm currently living at home, but once I go to university, I'll be on my own for my last 5 years of college. I recently got a job to build a savings because I am moving to Texas to finish school. So for the next 6 years, I'm probably going to work as many hours as I can at a minimum wage job, while completing a BA and then a JD. For five of those years, I will be supporting myself. Those five years are going to be tough, and if I'm unable to qualify for large merit-based scholarships, then I'll accrue thousands of dollars in student loans, but at the end, I'll be one of the youngest lawyers in the nation, living in a state with a great economy, and making six figures as a starting salary. Essentially, I'm betting on myself to do well in school and become a successful lawyer. What leftists don't understand is that education is an investment, and people aren't as likely to succeed in school if they aren't risking their own money on said investment. I'd rather work really hard these next 6 years and have a great job and get to enjoy my earnings, than have my school paid for the next 6 years and barely get paid anything after taxes, even though I would hold one of the more prestigious and high paying jobs in this country. I want to live I'm a free country, not one where the highly qualified and educated get shafted because they make about the same as everyone else after taxes.
