The point at which we could row no further...
❄️
We’d reached the furthest point North we possibly could & there in front of us was a vast, surging, churning mass of ice. Broken, crunching & grating over itself it blocked our route meaning there was nothing we could do but turn the boat and head South West.
❄️
This was taken at 79° 55’, the furthest recorded row North ever.
❄️
Danny, Sam & Tyler were at the oars keeping the boat off the ice which was a danger we had to avoid.
❄️
It was an incredible environment to be in, cold, raw, stark & wild. Only the creatures that inhabit these icy waters see those views, we felt privileged to be there amongst it although we didn’t hang around for too long!

Here’s a shot from the deck of our ocean rowing boat about three months ago. It was the last time we saw the sun before the clouds came down and the weather changed dramatically. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
Here we were floating somewhere in the icy Greenland sea having released our sea anchor after battling into a raging headwind and going nowhere. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
Saving energy at the expense of comfort...we all had to cram ourselves like sardines in a can on top of each other in the cabins and seal ourselves in for safety. The doors had to be airtight shut so we weren’t sent to the depths of the ocean if we capsized...
🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
As the weather closed in the waves picked up and the real challenge began...
🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
Sending a thought to my friend @polarben who is on his incredible Trans-Antarctic solo mission right now. The first solo, unsupported and unassisted crossing of Antarctica.❄️

Last night Angus & Laura had the pleasure of meeting @alexgregorygb at the @igoadventures Inspired by Adventure event.
.
Alex and his team @thepolarrow, rowed a Rannoch R45 boat from Norway to Svalbard to Iceland, creating 11 records, the most records ever achieved by a human powered challenge!

There's a short interview coming with Alex on our Facebook later. In the meantime read a description of this picture below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

I always felt I had to concentrate hard to be ready for what was coming towards us. Every now and then we'd get a wave that we hadn't seen coming from a random direction that would shock us, but we could mostly watch and predict what was coming. Here me, Sam Vye and Tyler Carnevale are rowing in the cold rough wet conditions we encountered for many days...normally in rowing we say eyes in the boat, here it was all about eyes out of the boat!! #polarrow #oceanrowing #rowinglife #waves #wind #rough #rowing #recovery #focus #endurance #24hourdaylight #arcticadventures #arcticcircle #whitehorses

The crew have been rowing for 37 hours and have almost lost sight of Svalbard, the nearest land, as they head north into the Arctic Ocean. The boat has covered over 120 nautical miles (225km) since setting off early Tuesday morning and has kept up an average speed of 6.3km/hr. Polar Row is now heading towards the 80th parallel north, where it's likely that they will start to encounter ice. The aim is to beat their own record for the northernmost row ever, before turning south to head for Iceland... •

Thank you to the @telegraph for today's article on my rowing life, polar row, disgusting hands, what the future holds and the adventures yet to come. I've been incredibly lucky in my life so far & I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead! •

During those times a few weeks ago when I was sitting on my rowing seat in the middle of the Arctic Ocean wondering which wave was going to come from just the wrong angle and send our boat upside down, all I wanted to do was be back with my little ones sharing fun times and having adventures with them. We haven't been far today, or gone anywhere exotic, but we've had fun outdoors and made some memories together!

Breaking records is the team motto for @thepolarrow - a crew of international rowers carried the coveted Explorer's Club flag on a pioneering initially two-stage, later extended to three-stage Arctic expedition. The first stage of the expedition departed Tromsø (Norway) for Longyearbyen (Svalbard), and was officially recognised as the first ever South to North row in the Arctic, and reached the northernmost latitude achieved by a rowing crew (record which stood for 27 years) and among many records broke existing Arctic Ocean speed record by 3.5 times.

One thing that remained constant throughout our recent Arctic row was the birds. Wherever we were, no matter how far away from land we found ourselves, there was always a bird a few minutes away. Closest to land we saw Puffins, flapping their wings ten to the dozen keeping their little bodies aloft. They would fly off when they saw us but these Northern Fulmars were everywhere. On the hours we remained still on sea anchor like in this little clip, they would stop, land on the water next to us and watch us, bobbing on the waves. When we were moving, whatever the time of day or night, whatever the weather they would fly over us and around us giving us the most incredible flying display. They are really skilful flyers skimming the water, moving over waves, centimetres above the peaks and following the contours of the waves as they rose and fell. I loved to watching them fly, at times they reminded me of a giant sized peregrine falcon! #polarrow #waves #birds #oceanrowing #arctic #adventure #sea #rowing #sealife #nature #ocean #instatravel #instadaily #wind #freezing #friends

The UK is ace, but I'm definitely having a few Jan Mayen withdrawal symptoms! Such an amazing place, such a privilege to be allowed to visit and explore :) #janmayen #natureisawesome #allthefilters #legpoweredadventures #polarrow #rowingtramps #norway

On the oars with Carlo Facchino, @tycarnevale & Sam Vye emerging from the cabin ready to take over for his 90 minute shift.
We worked on a 90 minute rotation for 12 days and nights. It's amazing how quickly the body gets used to high energy expenditure and lack of sleep.
This weather was typical for the journey South to Jan Mayen from the Northern most point we reached, 79 degrees 55 minutes latitude. At times it was significantly worse of course, but what I feared the most was the chance of capsizing in the frigid water. You don't get second chances out there!

A photo of my hands after spending so long in wet gloves. The blisters were never bad on this row, but the wet and damp seeped into the skin. It's been one hell of an experience! An early start this morning & we packed up & stepped off the boat that took us from the island of Jan Mayen. We're now in Northern Norway heading to the airport to fly home. This has been one extraordinary month, something unexpected & interesting at every turn. This latest boat journey has been just that, what an amazing machine! Here with the superstars Sam Vye & Carlo Facchino. Hopefully now the flights are simple & straightforward because I need to get home in time for my daughter Daisy's first day of school tomorrow!!

Almost 4 weeks ago we were here, slowly navigating our way through an ice field. We had to be so careful because it wouldn't take much for the ice to pierce a hole in the shell of the boat...
