Charlie Musselwhite playing with #benharper at the #boweryballroom. The legendary #harmonicaplayer still excites the crowd with his wicked #blues playing. His life is the stuff of movies. Born in Mississippi (along with Elvis in 1935) in 1944 with distant Cherokee descent. His father played guitar and harmonica, his mother played piano. His family moved to Memphis at age 3 where he grew up absorbing rockabilly, western swing, and electric blues which permeated the city (e.g. #staxrecords). Musselwhite as a young man took off on the "Hillbilly Highway", Highway 51 to Chicago, where he lived and played on the South Side, making friends with the blues legends, especially #johnleehooker. He released his first album in 1966 to great success. He then moved to San Francisco to immerse himself in the psychedelic and blues rock scene. He convinced Hooker to follow him. Since then he has released over 20 more albums including The Harmonica According to Charlie Musselwhite which came with an instructional book and became an unanticipated huge hit. He has also been in a number of movies including #bluesbrothers. Musselwhite lost both of his parents in 2005 in separate incidents and his mother was murdered. In 2010, he released the album The Well inspired by Jessica McClure's ordeal as a child trapped in a well for over 58 hours in 1987. Deeply moved by her courage he decided to quit drinking. His 2-album collaboration with Ben Harper has excited blues lovers and introduced him to a new generation of listeners. Among his many awards he was deservedly inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
