#3⃣ Airline of The Week
In collaboration with @gabrielrandone 🤙😎
Alitalia - Società Aerea Italiana S.p.A (ICAO: AZA / CALLSINGN: ALITALIA). 🇮🇹
Alitalia is an italian major airline and the former flag carrier, mainly based in the airport of Rome Fiumicino, where it operates its large fleet of 98 aircrafts. -----
The name Alitalia comes from the two italian words "ali" which means "wings" and "Italia" (Italy). -----
Although Alitalia has been relatively growing since its foundation in 1947, the recent history of the company is characterized by several bankruptcies during short periods of time, always followed by as many attempts not to cease the company's operations, primarily financed by the Italian government. -----
Alitalia was the largest operator of the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 family in Europe, operating 90 MD-82 models.
The MD-82 formed the narrow body part of the fleet until early 2000s, when it started to be gradually replaced by the newer A320 family.
Each of the 90 Alitalia's Maddogs was named after an italian city (the one above is named after Verona). The MD-80 has really been a beloved aircraft for Alitalia; Alitalia's flight and cabin crew used to name it "il tubo" (the pipe) because of its stretched shape.
❓DID YOU KNOW❓
----- The company's MD-80 farewell flight in 2012 (AZ1740 from Catania to Rome) was escorted by the italian air force acrobatic team "Frecce Tricolori". 🇮🇹 The Alitalia MD-82 has become an iconic italian symbol: "each time I hear the loud noise of an airplane taking off and I watch the sky looking for it, I'm very disappointed to not see an MD-80 anymore."
