Accepting happiness is something I am still learning. For people who haven’t suffered from mental illness, this might sound weird. But I’m sure someone can relate to me. As I continue my recovery, I find it really difficult to accept that happiness is something I can feel. For nearly 2 years, I haven’t felt true happiness. Yeah sure, I smiled and laughed, but I never felt truely happy. So when that emotion, happiness, keeps appearing more and more. I find it almost distressing. When is it going to leave, is it fake, are everyone’s expectations going to be back to when I wasn’t suffering? Accepting day by day and the emotions that come with it. I’m truely appreciative of the happiness I get. But I can still acknowledge that I find it hard to feel I deserve the happiness. Happiness feels so foreign to me, I haven’t felt it properly in years. It’s scary, but also exciting. Feeling happiness is a sign of recovery.
It’s okay to have weird triggers for thoughts. Today in my lesson, we had to do a health quiz type thing, and having to reflect on my eating made me spiral down into thoughts of negativity. It’s important to recognise triggers and make sure you know how to respond to them. There’s no such thing as a ‘wrong’ trigger, if it affects you, then it affects you. Full stop. Find out ways that you can help yourself if you find yourself triggered by something. I found by writing down things that make me important and beautiful that weren’t related to my appearance helped calm me down. Respect triggers. Main message.
