A rare and charming Heron's Bill (#erodium) for the rock garden or large containers. Easy to grow and long-flowering, provided the soil is coarse and well-draining, and that you, the gardener has a lazy watering habit. Full sun, very compact, zone 6. Nepetaaaaaamassed! How to create a perfumed blue carpet and keep it tidy with little maintenance? Do it this way: 1.: By planting Nepeta roughly 1 foot apart, you make sure the plants will cover the ground quickly. 2.: Use about 3 in. of fine mulch (natural wood chips) to keep the soil from drying out. Watering might become unnecessary altogether, depending on your climate. 3.: Cut it down to half of its size in May. This will make the plants grow more compact, and also offsets the flowering time. Pretty dahlias until the end of the season 🌺🌼🌿Taller varieties of Dahlia have a tendency to fall over. While they are handsome in June, later in summer they can become kind of shapeless and leggy. Avoid this by cutting them early on and regularly. Cut a bit deeper every other time and remove more than only the faded flowers. Staking is always a good idea and is best done early in the year by tying each main shoot to a separate stake. #dahlia #gardening #practicaladvice #handson #handsongardening #howitreallyworks #landscaping #gardening #mygarden #gardencare #gardenmaintenance #groweverywhere #plantknot

It's a few years now that we have compact Heleniums (#sneezeweed #helenium) reaching hardly more than 70 cm / 2. ft. The variety in the picture is called 'Short'n sassy'. Even more variability brings the right cut at the right moment: cut it down to about 2/3-1/2 in mid march and get more compact plants. Depending on how low and when you cut flowering times and heights may turn out differently. A nice way to experiment. #perennials #heleniums #gardening #gardencalendar #gardenwork #gardenlife #gardening #flowers #flowersinthegarden #plantknot

I remember the first time I saw a real Frangipani. Someone handed me a pot with a "stick" with 5 leaves on it, saying dryly "Want it? We have a surplus". Now that's what I call a problem, frangipani surplus. #frangipani #frangipanis #frangipaniflowers #tropical #plumeria #apocynaceae #scentedflowers #indoorgarden #tropicalgarden #tropicalgardens #indoorgardening #perfectflowers #prettyflowers #flowers #flowerstagram #plantknot

Here the solution to this quite difficult plant: nobody's really sure what they are, those colorful plums. The plum (Prunus domestica) has split into several lines, many of which have been cultivated and selected into varieties for thousands of years, which then crossed and split again etc. Long story made short, it's a big confusion. In English they are called Damson (purple, pink, or yellow) Greengage (green), Mirabelle plum (large and round), and sometimes Reneklode. Many local heirloom varieties have their respective local names. 🌸🌸🌸 How is this fruit called in your part of the world, in your language? Only one clue: it is a kind of plum. #fruit #fruitgarden #edible #ediblegarden #obstgarten #plum #rarefruit #prunus #doyouknow #kitchengarden #thehappygardeninglife #homegrown #growfood #gardenchat #plantknot
