Vasisthasana (Side Plank) .
Vasisthasana (pronounced VAH-shees-THAH-suh-nuh), more commonly known as Side Plank Pose is a powerful arm balance. Vasisthasana gets its name from the Sanskrit word “#vasistha,” which means “most excellent” or “best.” #sideplank pose has many benefits such as strengthening the wrists, forearms, shoulders and spine.

Vasisthasana is also a favorite because it challenges a yogi’s ability to remain calm and focused. This pose increases flexibility in the wrists and the full version (with the top leg raised perpendicular to the floor) opens the hips and hamstrings. Vasisthasana also tones the abdominal muscles and improves one’s #concentration and #balance. Side Plank Pose is an excellent preparation pose for more challenging #armbalances.

And yes, generally speaking, looking forward 😳 is a good idea if you're walking (beware of street poles), driving, (beware of pedestrians), or running (away from cheat meal temptation)! 😆 lol. But if you're planking, the best place for your eyes is actually DOWN THERE!

Because the plank is such a basic and essential exercise, I'm always finding ways to improve upon my form. A lot of people - myself included - have the tendency to want to look forward, lifting the head up rather than keep the spine in neutral looking towards the ground. That's why my top photo is much better than the bottom but not quite perfect (still working on getting better every day right along with you!) Keeping your neck in neutral (not too rounded down or too flexed up) will help a lot with body alignment, making sure your abs and glutes stay firing, and won't hurt your neck and shoulders in the long run.

The "neutral spine," a fancypants way to say "natural position of the spine" happens when all 3 curves: cervical (neck), thoracic (middle) and lumbar (lower) are in good alignment. It's actually the strongest position for our spine because the natural curves help cushion and protect our spine from injury. And don't worry, I didn't make this up to sound smart on the Internet lol, it's something I recently learned in my anatomy classes!

I have a good friend Jess, who's IG handle is @plankingforpizza. I always think of her when I'm planking and that there's a big fat slice of pepperoni on the floor below me (hence keeping me from looking up and my spine in neutral). Because unless Red Bull gave its wings to Round Table, 🍕 pizza won't be flying up in front of you anytime soon!Remember that next time you're planking! LOL!

Progress — Let’s talk about it. .
With all the progress photos going around these past few days I wanted to touch on the subject —
Sometimes progress is small, and that is OKAY! Sometimes you have no progress, you plateau or regress and that is OKAY! Either way you are where you are meant to be in your practice. You can always improve when you put your mind to something and practice it, so never give up if you are in a “bad” headspace about not having much (or any) progress in something. The little steps you take each and everyday will add up, promise 💕

👉Be sure arms are perpendicular to the floor and the shoulders directly over the wrists, torso parallel to the floor.
👉Press your outer arms inward, spread shoulder blades away from the spine, and spread your collarbones away from the sternum.
👉Press your front thighs up toward the ceiling, lengthen tailbone toward the heels. Look straight down at the floor, keeping the throat and eyes soft.
