Want snipeless boards? Build a planer sled. I used a piece of laminate countertop I had replaced after a kitchen renovation. Boards were sliding right through and coming out clean on the other side! #planer #planersled #repurposed #wifebelikewhyyoukeepingthiscounterandimlikecuzdis

I made a planer sled for flattening slabs. Since a planer will leave a twist in a board, sending slabs through on their own isn't good enough. I started by gluing two sheets of MDF together using a bunch of lumber as weight, with clamps on the edges holding them in place. After the glue set, I put a bay slab on the sled while it was resting on a flat surface with no twist. Then I shimmed the board with wedges and used hot glue to get them to stay. The next step was running the sled with the shimmed board through the planer. After a few passes it had a flat side, ready to be turned over and sent through the planer with the flat side down.

Maxed out my planer sled today cleaning up this piece of oak that I am using in the tree build. @ridgidpowertools

Have you made and used a planer sled before?

Milling up some 1/4” walnut today @claremontmakerspace with the new planer sled that I made for the shop. The piece on the far right is 3/8... because ya never know. #volunteering #planersled #walnut #makersgonnamake @grizzlyindustrial

Just a follow up on my last post. Here is my planer sled in action in my old basement shop with an Ash tabletop board. I added a conveyor roller at the end of my bench to help out. Have you guys tried a planer sled?

A repost of my planer sled I made a while back. Used in conjunction w/ my router flattening jig worked very well.
I used rubber coated knobs from McMaster Carr as height adjusters. And yes you can tap threads directly into wood in certain circumstances. The board was held in place by screws along one edge. I used 2 layers of 3/4” birch plywood so it would be extra strong. This Ash board is one board of my dining room tabletop. Check it out in my feed. Thanks.

Just a follow-up on my last post. Here is the router flattening jig in action. This is a table top board being worked on.
More details about the table, jig, and planer sled are in my feed. Thanks.

Made a planer sled today. This will let me flatten twisted and cupped boards without a jointer or hand tools. Exciting! .

Pecan slab bench start to finish 18”x11”x40”. The piece of wood was pretty twisted and gnarly. If it had been planed complete flat it might have only been 1/2”. So I routed a level dado in the back for the base, then attached and shimmed a sled to those metal pieces. I then gingerly sent it through the planer. Actually worked really well, which is always a big surprise. .

I couldn’t have built this table without building jigs. From the router flattening jig, to the planer sled, to several router jigs for the legs. I really enjoyed figuring all of it out. There are more details about all my jigs in my feed. Thanks!

I was flattening charcuterie boards with my planer this weekend. This worked out pretty well just using an mdf base with a cleat and non-slip mat. Thanks to @woodworkweb for the idea. #woodworking #charcuterieboard #planer #planersled #curlymaple #walnut #oneofakind #messyshop

Hi five 👋 it's Friday! I milled up some funky looking Ash for a workstation/computer desk build. I'll be using it for the table top--exciting stuff 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️ ... using a planer sled, gotta get a big jointer one day 😜

We wait a little bit of mineral spirits on this Live Edge red Elm coffee table top just to get an idea of its natural color.... Pretty pumped on it

The board I used for the robovac house (link to the video in bio) had quite a lump in one place. I broke out my hand plane to bring it down a bit before using my planer sled.

WI Cutting Boards, Step 3: plane the glue ups and cut into smaller sections for easier handling. If needed scrape off any glue on the surface prior to planing. If the glueup is not flat use a planer sled with shims to prevent any rocking and run through until top surface is flat. Then remove planer sled and plane other side.

Here's a quick video demonstrating the inlaid cross grain back supports that we install in our solid wood, flat panel, modern cabinet doors.
.
Most times flat cabinet doors are made from plywood with Edge banding, we prefer to use solid wood for our cabinet doors. The only drawback with this is that when you get a wide door with all of grain in one direction, the panel can become susceptible to cupping across the grain. .
The way we counteract this is to cut some dados exactly half the thickness of the door, across the grain, in three locations. These dados are cut into the back of the door. Then, 3 strips of wood are glued into these dados. The wood grain on these strips is perpendicular to the grain of the rest of the panel, by orienting the grain at 90 degrees, the cupping action of the door is counteracted. This will make for a very strong, and very stable door.
