I'd forgotten about this spot. Exactly 100 years ago, a civil war was being fought in the newly born independent Finland. My home town, Tampere, saw some of the worst battles, finally ending on this hill. The war and its aftermath were among the bloodiest and bitterest in European history.
The black granite monument commemorates the losing side, the "red guards", workers fighting to form a socialist government.
Rather fittingly, the photo is untouched -- that's the colours, with wintery dusk just beginning.
