George Ward (1803-1878) and his wife Elizabeth Thorlow (1811-1842) emigrated, as newlyweds, from Yorkshire to the Oakville, ON area in 1831. They are my 3x great grandparents and in my family tree they were the first to come over to Canada from England. They had 5 children all born in Canada and then Elizabeth died in her 32nd year, likely worn out from childbirth and the rigors of settling into a new and rugged land.
George's headstone is in pretty rough shape. I had to unearth it from several inches of soil and grass. But its proximity to his wife Elizabeth and the headstone of his second wife Jane Wylie (1804-1873) leaves me in no doubt that this is his headstone. Also his date of death, 24th January 1878, is almost legible.
This little gem of a cemetery is hidden away behind an industrial strip mall on the Oakville/Burlington border. It is kept in good condition by the city although many of the flat stones are under soil and grass.
