It may surprise you to know that some of the greatest men and women of God whom we read about in the pages of Scripture have had their moments of doubt. Even the greatest of the Old Testament prophets, John the Baptist, struggled with doubt.

In John's case, we might say that his doubt was due to confusion. He had a certain concept of what the Christ was supposed to do that Jesus simply was not doing. It is not that Jesus was failing to do what He was supposed to do; it was that John misunderstood what God was going to do.

Scripture clearly taught that before the Messiah would establish His kingdom, He would suffer and die. Before Jesus would sit on a throne, He first would be nailed to a cross. This is what the Scripture taught. Passages like Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 spoke extensively about the suffering of the Messiah. But His role had been misunderstood. So John the Baptist sent word from prison to ask Jesus, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" (Matthew 11:2). Yet everything was going exactly as it was supposed to go. It is just that John misunderstood.

That can happen to us as well. Sometimes we misunderstand God and His Word. Something happens that wasn't part of our plan for our lives, and we wonder why God allowed it. We wonder whether He is paying attention. The problem is that we interpret God in light of the tragedy instead of the other way around. Many times, our doubt is due to our confusion about what we think God ought to be doing.
Are you entertaining doubts today? Take heart. God is in control, and He has His purposes in the circumstances of your life.

I read one of my morning devotionals today and had one of those ‘ah-ha’ moments that always make me wonder what other, simple, truths I’ve missed in my life. You see, I love my children. I mean the deep, feel-their-pain, kind of love. I feel so much pride when they do well that I often cry because of my love for them.

Oh, not the boastful kind of pride but, rather, the kind that springs from the heart when they ‘get it right’ in their life-decisions. I feel disappointment, but never stop loving them, when they don’t get it right.

I realized that my Heavenly Father loves me the same way…only on a much grander scale!

Friend, we are His children and He loves us, in spite of all our ugliness and sin, in such a way that you and I cannot and will not ever comprehend. He will always love us unconditionally. He will never lock the door behind us when we’re willful and turn away from His path. He will never hit the ‘ignore’ button and not take our calls. He will never write us out of His will.

You will always be welcomed back to His open arms (though the punishment may sting a bit). You will always be heard when you fall to your knees and call out to Him in prayer. And you will always have the promised inheritance of eternal life, mercy, grace and forgiveness that has been yours since you accepted the truth of Jesus’ death on the cross. Nothing will ever take His love from you. You are a child of the most-high, God, and He will never stop loving you unconditionally…nothing you do can change that!

Enjoy your day, my friend, with that truth tucked away in your heart!

Just as the basis of unity is found in Christ, so also is the foundation of Christian living. It is because of our relationship with Jesus Christ that we are redeemed. It is because our relationship with Jesus Christ then, that we live. Therefore, it would also stand to reason that because of our relationship with Jesus Christ, our entire lifestyle should be dictated by that. As Paul indicates, whatever we do should be done in the name of Christ. This is similar to what Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:31 prompting believers to do everything for the glory of God. It would stand to reason that if everything is done in the name of Christ, it should be done for God’s glory.

Paul is calling believers to a lifestyle. The Christian life is more than a series of do’s or don’ts. It is a full transformation in the way which someone lives. “To do anything in the name of Jesus is to act consistently with who He is and what He wants.”[1]

Paul says, “in word or deed” referring to the entirety of one’s life. By adding this very succinct phrase, Paul is saying with one’s entire being they should live for Christ. In fact, it is rightly said that “the ‘name of the Lord Jesus’ provides the proper atmosphere for life…..to live…conscious of his authority and reputation.”[2] That is to say, our life is most meaningful (lived rightly according to God) when we live with the right understanding of who Jesus Christ is. Thus, our lives must be lived under the lordship of Jesus Christ. [1] John MacArthur Jr., Colossians, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Chicago: Moody Press, 1992), 159.

There’s a quaint little saying that “The Lord never gives you more than you can handle.” As beautiful as that sounds, it’s not biblical, my brethren. Scriptures says He will always provide us with a way of escape, so that we may bear it. (1 Cor 10:13). Dictionary.com defines “bear” as: to hold or remain firm under (a load). So, to bear a trial (or temptation) does not mean that it will never come, or that it will never press you on all sides to your breaking point. Scriptures says the Lord will provide you with a “way of escape”. This escape, most of us will often find, comes after we have endured much of the heavy load already, and when we feel as if we are going to collapse and we call upon our Father for help; help from Him, because we are incapable of helping ourselves.

My friends, that is precisely what He wants from us; complete and utter dependence on HIM. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5). He wants us to rely on Him so completely. “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deut 6:5). He gives us more than we can bear ourselves by design. We would have no need for Him, no need for a Savior (Jesus Christ) and His work on the cross, if we could do it all ourselves if He never gave us “more than we can handle.” So next time you find yourself facing trials or temptation, ask the Lord, “Am I relying on You enough, Lord?” Then give it all over to Him. “The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:14)

God has a purpose and plan for your life, and His timing is perfect. Sometimes He answers our prayers with “yes” or “no.” But at other times, He says, “Not now.” When this is the case, we can avail ourselves of the rich rewards that come while we wait.

One very practical blessing is that God strengthens us as we lean on Him during delays. Isaiah 40:31 describes an eagle soaring—an apt metaphor for how the believer who abides in the Lord will be lifted and sustained by His Spirit. (In fact, it’s interesting to note that the Hebrew for “wind” and “spirit” come from the same word: ruach.) When we are facing a difficult decision, the real key is learning to wait. There is no verse of Scripture that tells us to take control and fight our own battles. God is the one who fights them on our behalf (2 Chronicles 20:15). We are to be patient and trust in Him.

When David faced his greatest battles, he waited upon the Lord. God delivered him from destruction and set his feet on solid ground (Psalms 40:1-3). He will do the same for you. When you abide in Him, He gives supernatural energy to accomplish the things He requires of you—His Spirit does for you what you cannot do for yourself.

In reading through the Scriptures, we see that every time one of God’s saints gains a victory, he or she is waiting and trusting in the Lord. You can likewise experience triumph in your life. When you have the omnipotent Creator of the universe acting on your behalf, you can’t lose.
