The plan of Canterbury Cathedral’s Waterworks - built by Prior Wilbert in 1150. An elaborate and complicated system for pumping fresh water from a variety of hillside springs, in careful order around the cathedral (priory). The cleanliness and sanitation would have been unparalleled in early Medieval life. Various parts remain intact. But the cathedral runs off mains water now, like the rest of us... And if you look carefully, you will see ‘Puteus’, meaning ‘well’, the old water source that pre-dated this 1150 cutting-edge innovation.
Was this well the source of ‘The Blood of St Thomas’? The red miracle water that millions of pilgrims came to take?
