⚠Please don't neglect shoulder external rotation⚠ Whether you're over a desk all day or working on #handstands ✌ 👉It will prevent your lower back from taking over in exercises where increased shoulder range of motion is needed ✔
👉It will immediately open your chest and straighten your back ✔
👉It will probably even make you look taller! (if you don't mind that 😉)
🌟You can use light resistance, a band or even *no* weight until you're comfortable with these movements 🌟

Ciąża to trudny czas dla Twojego ciała. Wiele rzeczy się zmienia. Najczęściej zamyka się klatka piersiowa i przykurczone są mięśnie odc ledzwiowego. Dlatego warto zadbać i o te mięśnie. Rozciągać je i rozluźniać. ❗Pamiętaj❗rozciąganie to NIE rozluźnianie i na odwrót. Warto też zadbać o mięśnie pośladków. Często kobiety w ciąży przenoszą ciężar ciała do przodu i "wiszą" na stawach kolanowych. Taka postawa ciała powoduje, że mięśnie pośladkowe się napinaja. Pomimo tego,że kręgosłup jest pozycji lordotycznej i pośladki powinny być rozciągnięte.

Start this one with both hands down. I used 1 Red spring. Stay strong through glutes and hamstring as you resist the carriage back to stopper each rep. Add the reach through opposite arm for progression.

I hope tomorrow’s girls are ready to get high! We’ll be climbing on top of our gorgeous Reformers in tomorrow’s Postnatal class, to werk werk werk that 🍑!
(And we won’t forget about your lovely quads too... they’ll feel the burn!)

Hearing "engage your core" and "keep your core engaged" drives me a little nuts.

I'm not sure the people saying it even know *why* they're saying it, or what it really means.

Your "core" or your abdominal muscles, diaphragm and pelvic floor all need to contract AND relax, as well as work in sync with one another for healthy function.

#healingwithpilates Week 44 - Hip Extension with the beautiful @functionfabulous and @zaynagold ! Who doesn’t love some hip extension for those 🍑🍑’s?! Here I demonstrate a very fun but tough hip extension series with the overball. The ball assists by engaging the hamstrings and can help the lower back from going into extension with the addition of the core being engaged. My barre girls will know these exercises well!!!☺️

My last Pilgrimage session in NYC took me early in the morning to Sixth Street Pilates in NY’s East Village where Anula Maiberg was waiting for me. Dressed in a stylish gray “overall” that would make Mr. Oshkosh envious, Anula assessed my condition and plopped me onto the Cadillac- sat me on small box and had me grab the pull down bar instructing me to roll back like on a short box series until I felt as though I would topple backwards. The stick was helping me stay rooted. Then I was to linger like that and press the bar down to my thighs - no easy task. Rolling back up, then back down and pressing the stick to my thighs then my ankles. Uff! After that routine we worked in my hips lifting the legs and bicycling. Some balance exercises and before I knew it we were finished and I was exhausted. Anula was great, sweet and smart. Thank so much. 💪🙌💞😘

When Wm. Shakespeare penned in A MidSummers Night Dream: “...and though she be but little, she is fierce...” he must have had in mind either my home Pilates coach @pilatesandrea or NY coach @rebekahrotstein. Rebekah is smaller so her fierceness is a bit more magnified. And when I arrived at Kinected Pilates on 19th St. @kinectednyc Ms Rotstein was ready for me. After assessing my problem areas - she went about working on them. I’m so grateful to the number of accomplished Trainers who have no trouble varying their instruction from The Method Order to address the body in front of them, using their amassed wisdom and skills to help heal. This is what Joe Pilates did as injured ballet dancers and boxers and ordinary “civilians” limped into his 8th Ave gym bent and frowning in pain. Rebekah worked on me on the hi Trap Table and she was a no-nonsense teacher demanding careful but complete reps - No Cheats. On the Reformer, Ms BuffBones repositioned my feet on the bar and eventually my butt too, sliding one to one side - the other to the other side - always working on opening the distance from my hips to my ribs. Standing side bends. She identified the unequal leg length and urged me to continue side bending. Thanks Rebekah- it was a fabulous hour working together on my problem areas. 💪🙌❤️😘

ARE YOU A BOBBLE HEAD?

To quote Ron Burgundy, your neck is kind of a big deal, because it holds up your head.
.
Yet, many of us don’t know how to control where our head is in space during movement - particularly during spinal flexion and extension, so we turn into bobbleheads, with the neck moving disproportionately more than the rest of the spine. .
.
A key aspect of neck control comes from accessing the deep cervical flexors (aka the core of your neck) + the deep front line.
However, a lot of us are stiff in the thoracic spine (upper back), so we bypass the movement that should happen in our upper back and crank on the neck instead..
.
Enter poor engagement of the deep cervical flexors, which = a literal pain in the neck. .
This need to engage the deep cervical flexors and control the position of the head applies all exercises, including hollow holds (spinal flexion), cobras (spinal extension), and planks (neutral spine). .
.
WHEN YOU CAN CONTROL THE MOVEMENT OF YOUR NECK YOU ARE BETTER ABLE TO DIFFERENTIATE MOVEMENT IN YOUR SPINE AND MOVE MORE EFFICIENTLY WITH LESS TENSION AND PAIN.
.
In the above video, I’m demonstrating how you can engage your deep cervical flexors during spinal extension. In the below video, @naablevy is showing how this applies to spinal flexion.

It’s not always possible to build your own work schedule but making small shifts and rituals can build a better support for your work days. For me, Monday mornings mean coffee while reading or emailing, personal practice time, tidying up loose ends, and setting my intention for the week.
