Let me tell you about sweet and spicy Miss Helga. She came to us a couple weeks ago from southern MO. She was joined by her two daughters and boar. Over the span of her short 2ish year life, she has carried at least 3 litters we know of - back to back. Out of the 30+ piglets produced by those 3 litters, only TWO piglets survived. These pigs were rarely and inconsistently fed. They were left behind when their "owner" moved away. They were seen only as $$. They were the victims of a backyard breeding ring and although we love all 4 of them, Helga is just extra special. She has gone through every pregnancy, labor and delivery without vet care. She has carried her babies while starving herself. Her body is a mess because of what it has gone through. She has been COMPLETELY MUTE since her arrival and we've just heard her make her very first sound this weekend... weeks. Weeks went by without a scream for food, or a call for her boar (Roger, who is at a separate foster), no screams at dinner time, no searching for her two babies (Grace and Tink). Nothing. Silence. For weeks. It was extremely exciting to hear her first soft little grunts as she was getting some scratches and relaxing. She is such a special girl, and she will NEVER have to carry a litter again. She is more than a dollar sign. She deserves so much better and we will see to it that she gets it.
