Acar Hu or Nyonya Pickled Fish is a much celebrated Nyonya recipe from the northern side of Malaysia, especially in Penang. I discovered this exquisite dish during a recent trip to Penang and decided to introduce it to our beloved fans here in JB. The original recipe uses silver mullet, however if you can't get your hands on it , this dish can still be made using fish fillet or a favourite fish of your own choice. The fish is initially deep fried then pickled with a turmeric-vinegar base, spiced with garlic, ginger, and chilies. The end result is a dish that is extremely tasty and appetizing , with a perfect balance of sweet, sour and tangy flavors. Acar Hu is best eaten with steaming hot rice.
This traditional Nyonya dish is also therapeutic as turmeric and ginger have medicinal values , good anti-oxidants and can dispel excess wind in the body. Many Nyonya dishes use plenty of herbs, spices and rhizomes for similar therapeutic effects besides being delicious and unique in taste. Definitely an authentic Peranakan recipe that is a must try! Pm us to enjoy this classic Northern Peranakan dish together with the Nyonya Tau Yew Bak and Sambal Kio! Such a good combination !
