⚡️PT. 2 PULL-UP ECCENTRIC LOWERING⚡️

💡When it comes to strength, the whole is usually less than the sum of its parts
.
💡 In fact, the total strength of both your limbs used together is often weaker than the sum of the strength of each individual limb used on its own
.
🗯 It’s possible for your dominant side to compensate for your weaker side, hiding imbalances that could later cause injury
.
✔️ Unilateral exercises, such as this variation of a pull-up, allow you to train away the asymmetries

🔧SETUP: Smith Machine, shoulders perpendicular to the bar, hand gripping the bar faces you (optional: chair/box underneath you to prevent from falling)
.

1️⃣ Shift your weight from your legs to your arms and SLOWLY lower yourself down, supporting yourself as needed with your legs. 🔵Try and lower yourself down for a count of 5-10 seconds
.
2️⃣ When your arms are straight and you begin to feel a slight stretch in your lats, return to the starting position by using using MOSTLY your legs❕ to squat yourself back up and your arms to go through the pull-up motion. This is a faster movement, the upward phase lasts for only ~1 second
.
3️⃣ Do 6-8 reps 🔁 for 3 sets

🤔HOW CAN I INCLUDE THIS IN MY ROUTINE?: Do these at the end of your resistance training routine. Over time, transition to using more & more of your upper body to pull yourself up to starting position
.
❗️When doing these exercises, start with your non-dominant hand. After working that side to fatigue, do the same number of reps on the stronger side
.

In my previous post I mentioned proprioception at the knee joint. What is proprioception? 🧐 It is basically awareness of body position in space. Proprioception is very important when it comes to stability. The ACL (and PCL) have mechanoreceptors which play an important role in sending the body information 🧠 regarding changes in tension, speed, acceleration, direction, and position

The idea of the above ⬆️ exercises is to work on proprioception and therefore stability 🏗at the knee joint. These exercises can be used for both prehab and rehab purposes. Each movement should focus on control, rather than speed and power (this will be in my next post). The addition of the airex (or an unstable surface) basically challenges your ability to stabilize the knee joint. Try to keep proper alignment from the hip ➡️ knee ➡️ ankle joint.

So simple but makes so much sense. So many injuries happen to pitchers who do not develop their lower body and core. Force Is generated from the floor. I often use the analogy of a whip. 🍑Whether you're a guy or a girl, having a juicy booty is desirable. The glutes are made of 3 muscles: gluteus maximus, minimus & medius. Glute max is the biggest & most superficial of the 3. It acts as an external rotator & a strong extensor at the hip. Glute Med & Min help to abduct at the hip & medially rotate the femur. Johnson et al. (1973) showed that the gluteus maximus is a mixed slow & fast twitch muscle, meaning that a mixture of both high & low repetitions is useful for its development✌🏽

🔥Some form of pre-activation exercise is beneficial as it may result in more glute activation in later exercises (Powers et al., 2016). The Hip Thrust is the king of glute max activation according to Contreras et al. (2015) & should be a staple in your glute day. Squats, although overrated as a glute builder are still a great exercise. Just like people who have a big bench normally have a big chest, the same can be said for squats and glutes. Research suggests a wide stance is optimal to increase glute activation (Pauli et al, 2009)🍑

🏋🏻Hyperextensions can also target the glutes, with a slight bend in the knee & toes pointing out maximising activation (Yoo & Park, 2014, Mayer et al., 2002).
The last exercise I would include is forward lunges with a long stride to increase hip extensor moments compared to shorter strides (Riemann et al., 2013). So, if you want that peach its time to give up the endless bodyweight squats & kick-backs - you need an added weight to result in any substantial growth adaption. It’s time focus on stop focussing on light weight isolation exercises like kick-backs and start hip thrusting and squatting heavily💪🏽

🔥 Single Leg Stability Drill with physioball 🔥

Use a stick at first so balance isn’t an issue, but then you can progress to doing the drill without support.
This drills focuses heavily on maintaining a leveled pelvis with glute medius engagement on stance leg.
Common impairment we see with single leg stability is a contralateral hip drop (trendelenburg gait) and lead to a lot of our knee and ankle clients.
1️⃣ Raise leg closest to ball in to 90 degrees hip flexion while slight pressing into ball by abducting hip
2️⃣ while this is occurring, you are rooting your foot into the ground by attaining hip extension
3️⃣And of course, maintain proper IAP throughout the drill

Here you can see a big difference between the 2 shoulders, significant muscle wastage on the right.
But the last 3 months of rehab are paying off as I'm slowly building my shoulder back up! I still can't load much pressure when my arm is stretched out but I'm making lots of progress each week.
