👩🏻🔬 Tested the pH of the AESOP’S AMAZING FACE CLEANSER 🔬
💠 It revealed a pH of 5.81 🤔
(My ideal range is between 4.5 to 5.5)
Now, I did like this cleanser when I used it. I loved the scent! It had a beautiful subtle scent of Ylang Ylang. I think it also did a great job at cleansing, and left my skin feeling really soft - not tight. 👌🏻
With that being said - I was really let down by the ingredients list. 😷Specifically, the inclusion of Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Methylisothiazolinone.⚠️
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is NOT the same as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). They’re both cleansing agents, but they are made up of different chemical structures.
While SLS is highly irritant to skin, SLES has been found to be less irritant (Löffler et al., 2003).
This, however, does not mean that your skin will be okay using products with SLES.🙅🏻♀️
SLES has still been proven to cause skin irritation (Ito et al., 2015), and I would especially stay away if you have sensitive skin.
Essentially, it’s the lesser of two evils 😈
& It’s the second ingredient in this cleanser, after water. 🙄
The most concerning ingredient in this cleanser is Methylisothiazolinone (Abbreviated as: MI). ❗️❗️❗️
As long as a product contains this dangerous ingredient, I will avoid it at all costs. 🚫
MI is used as a preservative in products, but is also widely known for causing epidemic outbreaks of Contact Dermatitis (Schwensen et al., 2017).
In fact, in 2016 the E.U. banned MI from all leave-in products (ie. moisturizers) and has regulated it’s use in rinse-off products such as cleansers or shampoos (It’s only allowed in very limited concentrations) 🇪🇺
Canada has adopted the same bans and limitations on MI. 🇨🇦
However, Americans listen up 🇺🇸U.S. companies are not required to follow guidelines for including methylisothiazolinone in their products.
For these reasons, I would never purchase this cleanser. (Despite the fact that I actually liked the way my skin felt when I tried it). It’s simply not worth it to me. 👎🏻
What ingredients are on your “watch list” when it comes to cosmetics and skincare? What are the deal-breakers for you?
I’d love to know your thoughts. 💭
