Halfway through her haircut, a man in maybe his mid thirties, who was waiting next to me to have his own hair cut, leans in and says to me "why did you let her do it?" 😫🤦♀️
"Why did I allow my child to make a decision about herself you mean?" I asked back. "You know, Let her cut her hair like that, she was so pretty before" he said, oblivious to the statement I had just made to his initial pathetic question.
I sat and let the fire build inside me while he proceeded to shake his head in my daughters direction and sighing with disappointment while the ladies in the salon tried to diffuse the situation, saying quite loudly "it's just hair, it will grow back". I watched the huge bright smile on her beaming face slowly dwindle down to a defeated glare in the mirror.
His turn came for his hair to be cut and he was seated right next to us, he got closer and continued to shake his head. She looked up at me with those huge puppy dog eyes and the mere thought of any woman, let alone my 9 year old daughter, leaving a hair salon and feeling lesser about herself because of the inconsiderate comments a man has made towards her really made me want to kind of poke his eyes out with my fingers.
But that's just how the world is. And we all have to live here together. Sometimes harmoniously and sometimes not.
I was so happy that I had only yesterday, told her about the row of birds, and how you always notice the one sitting on its own over the groups of birds that all look the same. "You remember what we spoke about yesterday don't you? Are you doing this for him? Or are you doing this for you?" She looked over at him, and smiled. A genuine smile with no ill intent. Because she's a true little lady, with the heart and soul of the Phoenix bird.
And she loves her hair.
