I can still vividly remember watching Gremlins at the theater with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousin when it was first released in June of 1984. As I sat there, completely mesmerized by the magic unfolding on the screen, I was taken on an emotional roller coaster ride as I was frightened by some of the film’s scarier scenes one minute, laughing out loud at the outlandish shenanigans of Stripe and his scaly cohorts the next minute, All the while feeling a giddy rush of excitement crashing against me in wave after glorious wave. I should also note that this film jumpstarted a lifelong love for both Gizmo and Phoebe Cates, and I still say that Gizmo is quite possibly the most adorable creature ever captured on film, while Phoebe is without a doubt one of the most beautiful.
The first Gremlins film is still as fresh and exciting today as it was when I was nine years old...and what Director Joe Dante and Writer Chris Columbus accomplished with that film is nothing short of perfection. In my opinion, it’s one of the greatest Fantasy films ever made...and I absolutely adore it. One of the main things that makes it so powerful is the brilliant character development and world building, and the palpable amount of heart that radiates from the screen in every frame. By the film’s glorious ending, you’ll be heartbroken, relieved and utterly spent emotionally...and that, my friends, is what great films do. By contrast, the second film, while nowhere near as magical as the original, is still highly entertaining and deserves far more praise than it gets.
If you’ve never seen these films before, you’ve gotta fix that IMMEDIATELY, as they are not only fantastic films, but they strike the perfect balance between Hilarity and Horror, making them ideal viewing for the whole family this Halloween. Therefore, I am submitting Gremlins 1 & 2 as tonight’s entry in my celebration of Family Friendly Frights. #gremlins #gizmo #mogwai #zachgalligan #phoebecates #coreyfeldman #hoytaxton #joedante #chriscolumbus #halloween #horror #funny #scary #hilarious #comedy #fantasy #heartwarming #intense #classic #bluray #bluraycollector #cinephile #filmlover #moviebuff #stevenspielberg
