I've got my airplane ✈️ coding essentials! 💻🎧☕️ What are yours? 👩🏼‍💻

WOW! @itslikepudding is a PhD student in biomedical engineering AND a lettering artist! Color me seriously impressed... absolutely love that she is fusing two worlds into one!

#LLMyDayJob is the tag and topic of this week's LL Challenge! Write it up and tag it out for a chance to be featured! 😊

"What do you do?" #GoodtypeTuesday
I'm a PhD student in biomedical engineering, & learning lettering to promote science. My goal is to make science concepts more fun & approachable through art 😊 I've been making #sciart as a side gig for a while now, but maybe one day I can become a full time science illustrator/communicator/artist.
.
I'm also a dumb dumb who can't read. Had to edit my lettering last minute to follow the challenge instruction...hope I still make it in time? (@goodtype seems to be in a different time zone 😱)
.
Here's another process video since you guys seem to enjoy it 👈 Swipe to see how I put this piece together & the "before" version. There are quite a few new things I tried here. I usually letter by hand but this time I added texture & layers digitally. The "-ist" part was done directly in Illustrator & Photoshop cause I didn't have time to start over. Also tried adding some drop shadow. The photo was taken in the emergency staircase of our building 😛

Wanna know something so super cool about my lab?
.
While I often talk about stem cells in the brain, the technique you see me doing here is used by many others in the lab to study stem cells in another part of the body: the eye! 👁️
.
Our lab was the 1st to find stem cells in a special part of the eye called the retina, which is what lets you see! This is because the retina is a black sheet at the back of your eye where all of the cells that can detect light are. Of note here are cells called rods and cones: rods are the cells that can detect low levels of light, and COnes help you see COlour and finer details that let you read things like this!
.
When people are born blind or go blind over time, it’s often because they are missing rods or cones or both. So it was a great surprise to find that there are special stem cells in the retina that can regenerate rods and cones!
.
Now here’s the really cool part … I can confidently say that YOU have retinal stem cells in your eye right now. While all my work on brain stem cells is done with mice, because of the accessibility of tissue in the eye we’ve actually been able to study these stem cells in real human eyes!
.
So does that mean that if you lost some of your rods and cones your stem cells would regrow them and you wouldn’t lose your vision?
.
Unfortunately, no. Like the stem cells in other parts of your body - like the ones I study in the brain - stem cells exist in the adult retina, but don’t do much on their own.
.
But research in our lab is trying to understand how we can change that. Since we are so lucky to have access to real human tissue we can test different drugs to see which can make the stem cells in human eyes wake up on command. And once woken up, ideally we want to have different signals to make them become exactly the type of cell needed.
.
And you know what, we are getting pretty. damn. good. at this! It’s slow but VERY promising work.
.
But none of this progress would have been possible without the kind humans who signed up to be organ donors once they pass away, and both our research - and anyone in the future who regains vision because of it - is eternally indebted to these donors. 🙏🏻

I really need to be better at note taking. It's all over the place. I'm currently putting together a how-to instruction guide (with screenshots) for the behavioural video analysis program I use. I've finally accepted that in order to get everything done I need to enlist some volunteers, so I need to make a guide. I keep worrying that I've left it some vital piece of info because it seems obvious to me, but might not be to the vollies. Argh!

2 years and 10 months took me to complete my thesis of 240 pages. It's been a bright and engaging journey. What do I feel now? Grateful. To everyone I met during my journey. To all my old friends whom I met before the journey and who are still with me. To my family. Especially to my dear daughter. Everything I do is for the two of us. It's been a great journey and it hasn't finished yet but now I'm allowed to have a little break. And I'm ready for a new journey, new places, new friends, new feelings, new knowledge and new skills. I don't know what's waiting for me but I'm certain that my life will be full of bright colours, meetings and experiences. And I'm looking forward to it! #phdlife #thesiswriting #thesisdone #grateful #kazakhstan #lifelonglearner #traveler
