📍🇬🇷 Meet Petros, the Pelican of Mykonos. Not very friendly, if you ask me. Maybe because I didn’t have fish in my hands. I don’t know how long pelicans usually live for because this one can’t be the original. The original one was adopted by a local in the mid-1950s.
🇬🇷Petros the Pelican is the official mascot of Mykonos. According to the legend, back in 1958, a local fisherman found a wounded pelican. He took care of the bird by providing medicine and shelter in the hopes to set it free once it regained its strength. When the pelican was set free he didn’t fly away. He was overwhelmed with the love and care he received from the locals and didn’t want to go. Petros lived happily on the island for nearly 30 years until he tragically died. There are a few theories about how he died. Some say he was hit by a drunk driver. The sad news quickly spread around the world as the island mourned for the loss of its great mascot. The Hamburg Zoo responded immediately with a gift; they sent a replacement named Petros Jr. Then Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, a regular Mykonos socialite, also came bearing gifts - lady pelican named Irini. The legend of Petros the pelican continues on the island to this day. #greece#mykonos#mikonos#pelican#petrosthepelican#petros#holiday#travel#vacation#eurotrip#mediterranean#photooftheday#travel
