THIS IS KURDISTAN | ROJHILAT - Part 8
Part 8 of "ROJHILAT" focuses on the Kurdish cities of Makû and Mehabad in East-Kurdistan.
Makû is located close to the borders with North-Kurdistan near Bazîd, the Kurdish town famous for its Kurdish Ishak Pasha Palace. Makû itself is also rich in historic sites. It is home to the Baqchech Jooq Palace, ruins of an ancient fortress, and several historic bridges. None of those places are featured in this clip. Instead, it features the Armenian St. Thaddeus monastery (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is located close to Makû in Chaldiran. This shows the region's ethnic and religious diversity.
Mehabad is a major city in Rojhilat, well-remembered for having been the center of the short-lived Kurdish Republic of Mehabad, which was declared in 1946 the Peshawa Qazi, a Kurdish revolutionary who is positively remembered and celebrated in all four occupied parts of Kurdistan until this very day. Peshawa Qazi gave his life for his people and did not sell Kurdistan like a certain faction did in the Kurdish city of Kirkuk several days ago. Mehabad has unfortunately suffered greatly from urbanization; many of the city's historic structures are gone. Luckily some remain. The most interesting site is perhaps the rocktomb of Faghragha. The tomb is carved high in a mountain side, consists of 4 pillars, and housed three caskets. The tomb dates back to the Median Era of Kurdistan and is at least 2600 years old.
