After years (...decades...) of thought and consideration on this topic, including a few significant changes of mind in some areas, I currently believe that a laser mounted on a small defensive carry gun expands the circumstances under which you could use the gun for defense much more than a light would.
For larger guns, having a light/laser combo similarly expands contextual usefulness for the average armed homeowner or CCWer much more than just a WML would.
A couple of things before I invite you to try to objectively convince me I’m wrong:
1. I believe a laser is a tertiary aiming device, certainly not to be considered a psychological tool... so, throw out any of the “if he sees the laser, I don’t need to shoot” stuff.
2. Instant On or pressure switch models only... the former adding more than the latter.
3. It’s probably important to stress the use of “defensive” in the thoughts above... not scenarios where you are searching for a threat, etc...
4. When I say decades, I mean specifically at least 33 years.
