SOTD “English Oak & Hazelnut“ by Jo Malone (bottled autumn forest)
English Oak & Hazelnut is a walk through an autumnal forest. The golden sunbeams shimmer through the red and brown leaves and hit your skin. The slightly damp smell of the fallen leaves and the trees hits your nose. There is a comforting feeling in this smell that embraces you like a hug by a beloved person. Everything is quiet and peaceful. The only sound that can be heard is the wind in the trees and crushing sound caused by the steps you take on the dry leaves on the ground.
EO&H manages to capture this moment and amplifies the scent as if smelled through a magnifying glass (or in this case: magnifying nose). In addition the hazelnut note adds a green twist to the soliwood fragrance. The roasted English Oak is very natural and smells like a freshly cut tree. In fact, it’s me who smells like a (sexy) tree today.
The scent is quite unusual and will be noticed. So when I walked into the staffroom this morning, a colleague was intrigued by the fragrance and wanted to know what I was wearing. Rarely do I get these kind of compliments. So although Jo Malone has got a reputation of bad performance, this is not true for EO&H. I sprayed it at six in the morning and can still smell it after ten hours and it also still projects. If you like a more feminine version, try English Oak & Redcurrant that also has some rose in its heart (I have also heard that people enjoy layering these two fragrances).
This is the smell of last year’s autumn and will always be a staple in my autumn fragrance wardrobe. Nothing I have smelled so far has captured the scent of a forest as olfactorealisticly as this has done it.
