Never Not Love You (2018) by Dir. Antoinette Jadaone
Starring: James Reid and Nadine Lustre
(‼️ Since this is still showing, this contains a brief description of the film, hence, a SPOILER ALERT before you continue reading. ‼️)
I'm not a big fan of today's mainstream love-teams, but I've watched a few episodes (not the whole series) of the JaDine TV series (also directed by Ms. Jadaone) and I admit that I enjoyed it. So when I passed by the mall yesterday and saw the same names on the promotional poster just outside the cinemas, I didn't hesitate to watch. Within the first few minutes, I was hesitant because it felt like it was leading to a cliche love story but I'm glad I stayed. Unlike other movies of this generation, this so far, is the most realistic. Love is a risk, a compromise, but it's the most beautiful thing. Love makes you want to be a better person for your partner, for yourself. But sometimes, love can't draw the line between finding yourself, and losing yourself; between chasing your dreams, and chasing your partner's dreams with them; between "I want to be happy" and "I want him to be happy." I was torn between these choices throughout the movie. A part of me understands James' line of reasoning, (though I hate it every time he walks away without resolving their issue.) and a part understands Nadine's emotions. Because between the two of them, Nadine sacrificed more for their relationship to work, compromising her work, her dreams, the happiness she could've had in achieving those, for the happiness she have with James. I like the flow of the story, how through ups and downs, love remained, love prospered, and it just shows that when you found someone who could NEVER NOT LOVE YOU, you have found a love that is worth it all.
By the way, just want to add that I admire the cinematography. Superb setting and wonderful acting! (Which made it so relatable.) 8/10 stars.
