My favorite way to do flys given that my shoulders tend to run a bit tight. Little elbow bend and then on the last set, hold for a 10 second stretch to feel the burn; kudos to John Rusin for that one. The stretch is key!

Our second pec / anterior shoulder stretch. Again I like to use a 60-90 second hold, watching out for tingling in the fingers. Many people will feel a lot of stretch in their biceps in this position.

Pec/anterior shoulder stretch on a foam roller. We haven't talked about mobility a lot yet. In the big picture of things it is as important as strength if not more so. This is one of my favorite pec stretches that also hits the subscap and the anterior glenohumeral joint capsule. Don't be too agressive with this. There is a lot of anterior pressure on that shoulder. I usually only hold this for 60-90 seconds. Less if someone gets tingling or numbness into their hand.
Usually I will combine this with straight to the side and overhead positions. I'll show those in other posts.

One of my favorite chest and shoulder stretches, “The Can Opener.” Excellent for improving posture and releasing tension in the upper body. For those of you who struggled with my OG Chin Tuck, I bring you the MODIFIED Chin Tuck 😊

Here we use🚀gravity🚀to do the work for us 💪

You will need:
👉 A towel
👉 1x firm pillow or 2x soft pillows
👉 The floor

The towel should reach the base of your neck and the very back of your head should be on the pillow(s). This allows the chin to retract, the upper cervical spine to flex and the lower cervical spine to extend slightly. ☞ The opposite position of your head & neck when you stare at a screen! ☜

Note: Have your knees bent to support the lumbar spine and promote thoracic extension. Place your palms up to stretch your pecs and your brachial nerves.

Q: Can't I just lay vertically on a foam roller?
A: You're far better off on the towel. Laying on a foam roller often encourages lumbar extension that reduces thoracic extension and leads to the protracted chin, lower cervical extension & upper cervical flexion posture. This is what you are trying to fix!!

Simple stretch for relaxation. From your back bring one knee up and take it across your body to the floor. Use the opposite ✋ to push the knee down. Take a big breath in and as you exhale reach away and up with the other arm.

Spend 30 sec to 2 min per side and make sure the breaths are long. Should be getting pretty relaxed after that.

This shot was taken earlier today in Cancun as I opened up the chest to receive the splendor of my surroundings on the 1st of 365 days of 2018. I signed up for this challenge because my friend Lina loves your work and encouraged me to start the year fresh with mobility techniques to help us get ready for @themiamimarathon . I’m hoping this challenge helps me to be more in tune with body mechanics which help the body to refrain from pain and or injuries. I want to learn to understand my weaknesses and strengths through the work outs often some parts of our body need more in depth attention. I want this new year challenge to mentally help stimulate better habits therefore no excuses in doing the work because I appreciate my body 100%. The 3 words I embody are Glorious, Graceful and Powerful.

🔥Wall Pec Stretch🔥

The classic wall/door/squat rack pec stretch. Although the intent is good, the execution usually isn't. Here's why:
.
❌ "Wrong" Clips: the front of the shoulder is off the wall which allows a lot of stretching to the front of the shoulder joint itself, which may "feel" right, but it isn't. A large amount of people with shoulder issues have hypermobile (too flexible) anterior shoulder joint capsule (tissue that helps hold the joint together), so the last thing we want is for this to be stretched out more. However, the PECTORALIS MINOR is very often stiff and/or overactive, which, through it's attachment to the coracoid process (a bony protrusion at the front of the scapula) and ribs 3-5, tilts the scapula forward and can interfere with appropriate shoulder mechanics/health if it does not lengthen when we move overhead. We DO want to stretch/inhibit this muscle, but with most "pec stretching" the coracoid process is not properly stabilized to get an effective stretch. To be honest, I rarely encounter people that have truly stiff PECTORALIS MAJOR muscles (attaches from humerus/upper arm bone to the clavicle, sternum, ribs 1-6, and the external oblique muscle fascia) unless they specifically spend a large amount of time training these muscles through exercise or sport. So in most cases, stretching the pec major is not necessary.

👍🏼 "Better" Clips: options 1-2 provide a stretch to both the pec minor & major, while option 3 targets only the pec minor. The HUGE key here is the stabilization of the anterior humeral head (front of ball of upper arm bone) and coracoid process onto the wall in order to stabilize the humerus and scapula, achieving a much more efficient stretch to the PEC MINOR by posteriorly tilting the scapula while limiting unwanted movement at the anterior shoulder joint capsule. In addition, actively contracting the antagonist (middle and lower trapezius muscles) while stretching will help to neurologically inhibit the pecs while they are mechanically lengthened. You should feel the stretch in the chest, NOT the shoulder.

We don't speak about prehab and rehab often enough, and there's a reason for that. We don't do it as much as we should.

As part of the new routine, taking care of our bodies with mobility work is something of focus now. A simple test of your flexibility just may enlighten you as to which areas to pay attention to.

Shown here is an effective stretch for your deltoids and upper pecs. Grab ahold of a barbell set just below shoulder height. Keep your palms facing down and hands roughly 15" to 25" apart. Slowly straighten out your back to stand up with good posture.

Test it to see how straight your spine is, then hold it for a minute and test again. Is there a change?

You might have seen from my story yesterday that I am doing the #gratefulformobility challenge with the #mobilitymethod and #docjenfit which I am so excited about! Yesterday we concentrated on opening up the chest, which is a super tight area for me. I struggle with lack of lower trap activation due to the tightness in my pec minor, which causes my shoulders to slump forward. This is common in office workers because we sit with our shoulders slumped forward for so long that our shoulders start to round. I am always looking for new ways and really enjoyed the wall stretch shown here. Looking forward to Day 2! .
