Bella the #peacockmantis decided to give us this beautiful treat today! #truecolours #display #mantis #peacock

Don’t let looks fool you—these beautiful crustaceans, known as Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus), are ferocious undersea predators. The colorful stomatopods hunt with clubbed forelimbs, and can wallop their prey at the speed of a .22 caliber bullet--enough to break aquarium glass.
When they aren’t using their specially adapted striking-appendage, they fold the limb under their body, where it compresses into a saddle-shaped spring. The animal’s vision is among the most advanced on the planet: they have two eyes with three focal points each, with light receptors that can detect both ultraviolet and infrared ends of the spectrum. Consequently, these remarkable crustaceans can see colors that humans can’t perceive. Mantis Shrimp or also know as Peacock Mantis have pretty great colors that remind us all of the one of a peacock 😉 They are super strong creature and always amaze us when we find them underwater.
Thank you Thierry Aubertin for your photo taken last year during your safari with us.

Their eyes are the most amazing in nature. Humans possess three color receptors (red, green, and blue light). Mantis shrimp contain 16 color receptive cones, and can perceive ultaviolet light, polarized light, and even circularly polarized light. Their eyes are mounted on stalks controlled independent of one another, so that almost complete 360 degree vision is possible. Each eye is configured in such a way that the same point in the visual field is seen by three different locations of a single eye, so that each eye is capable of true depth perception. Humans cannot imagine the visual experience of these creatures due to our limited relative capabilities.

They burrow into loose substrate at the base of coral reefs. They possess a so-called "raptorial appendage," which is a specialized club-shaped arm. They use this appendage to smash their prey (gastropods, crustaceans, and bivalves). Their punch is the fastest recorded of any animal, and accelerates similar to a .22 caliber round. They can break aquarium glass. Probably couldn't beat Muhammad Ali at his peak, though.

In past posts we have looked the impressive optical array of the Mantis Shrimps of the world, capable of observing wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that our eyes are blind to. However, usually unseen is a view of the other unique weapon in the arsenal of these impressive invertebrates, the club shaped appendages used to fire and stun and/or crush intruders or prey. These clubs can be fired at up to 23 meters per second with incredible force, causing water to implode and most biological surfaces to crumple. The clubs are a layered compound made of chitin (common in crustacean exoskeletons) to provide bendy felxibility and layers of a mineral called hydroxyapatite to give it bone-like strength.

The Peacock Mantis Shrimp is one of the most colorful and fascinating animals. It feeds on snails, shells and other crustaceans. With its 2 club-shaped raptorial arms it will repeatedly smash its prey until it can gain access to the soft tissue for consumption. It has a punch of over 80 km/h which is the fastest recorded punch of any living animal. In addition, the surface of its arms is highly resistant to fracturing. It has reportedly happened that camera housings were smashed up when getting too close for a photo 📸🤛💥😱
With its complex eyes which can be moved independently in any direction and 12 to 16 different photoreceptors in its midband (humans have 3: red, green, blue - RGB) it has one of the most evolved visions on our planet 👀 Check the second picture for a closer look and more details.
