On this day in 1961, Congress approved legislation to permanently establish the Peace Corps. President John F. Kennedy then quickly signed it into law. Since that day 56 years ago, more than 225,000 Americans of all ages have served in 141 countries worldwide to create lasting change. #otd #peacecorps #jfk #volunteer #explore #discover

On #ThisDayinHistory 1961, President John F. Kennedy signs legislation establishing the Peace Corps as a permanent government agency. Kennedy believed that the Peace Corps could provide a new and unique weapon in the war against communism and had issued an executive order establishing the Peace Corps in March of that year. As described by Kennedy, this new organization would be an “army” of civilian volunteers–teachers, engineers, agricultural scientists, etc.–who would be sent to developing nations to assist the people of those regions. Kennedy hoped that by improving the lives of people developing countries, they would become more resistant to the charms of communism and convinced of America’s sincerity and ability to help them. In the years after 1961, thousands of Peace Corps volunteers were sent around the world. Some faced indifference, some even faced danger. For the most part, however, the Peace Corps “army” proved to be a valuable, and relatively inexpensive, Cold War weapon for the United States. Though the Peace Corps is no longer viewed as a weapon against communism, it has outlived the Cold War and continues to send participants to various nations. #PeaceCorps #JFK #OTD #volunteers #coldwar

Sharing bc Peace Corps isn't rainbows & butterflies & bc it's easy to want to share the good moments, but not the hard ones.
Today I got up at 7:30 to help facilitate an empress regional link-up. Empress is a women's volunteer support network started a couple years ago for us female PCJ volunteers. What's usually an hour and a half trip took me 3 hours, I got sun burned, and was a little bit late. Despite that, I felt connected and empowered and like I wasn't going crazy after the link up, until I got in a taxi to go home. One of the things we talked about was that when you're being sexually harassed in Jamaica (which happens every day), how you decide to respond can affect your safety. I was the first person in the taxi, and as I waited for it to fill, a man came over to tell me how beautiful I am, but then how he liked my body, how my breasts made him feel a certain way, the fantasies he was going to have of me, how I look like I make good love, and how "im waan fi breed mi." He kept leaning into the car closer and closer to me and I was alone. No one was around. And it wouldn't stop. Finally another taxi driver walked passed to ask me if I was alright. The harassment kept up from other people until I got to my shopping town & ended with another taxi driver asking if we could swap photos because he just liked me so much.
The day didn't totally end on a low note though- I lost my work gloves two months ago. About three weeks ago I found one walking home & then today I found the other on the road! The arugula I'm growing is finally growing bigger! I even ate a leaf today I was so excited. My compost pit sprouted some seeds. What kind of seeds? Idk yet. Lolz. The bad days suck. Especially the ones that are bad because they make you feel so violated. But there are also little victories, like finding bean sprouts in the store and people teaching me new words in Patwa, and coming home to kitty snuggles and my kindle. Some days are more surviving than thriving, but I am doing it

On this day last year, I had officially sworn in as a Peace Corps volunteer after being in Guinea for more than 2 months. Training was intense trying to master French coming in with absolute ZERO knowledge, and the basics of two of the local languages, not to mention learning about Guinea's healthcare system. Those 2+ months of training were filled with laughter, tears, smiles, and frustrations but I made it through training and even achieved intermediate mid at my french evaluation. I truly miss my incredible host family who made those 2.5 months seem like a few weeks 😜. I still remember crying when rats attacked me in my room, getting executed twice, and the roof caving in on me during training. There were times when I felt like I couldn't make it in Guinea but I made and I'm STILL making it or should I say thriving in my community. 14.5 months down only 12 more to go. #PeaceCorps #PeaceCorpsGuinea👏🏾👏🏾

So tonight is the final night Jon is in town before he heads off to Lesotho to join the Peace Corps for two and a half years. It's bittersweet to say goodbye, but if there's anyone I know who can conquer no running water, no electricity, and new environments with new languages, it's him. Praying for a safe flight and many stories of your adventures. Love you brudder.

Paches de Papa: traditional Guatemalan tamales filled with mashed potato, a guaque chile sauce, and cooked meat wrapped in the leafs of the Maxán plant. These are traditional to the region I'm living in Guatemala, and are probably my favorite local food! #peacecorps #peacecorpsguatemala #paches #pachesdepapa #guatemala #food #tamales #mayancuisine #mayan #tasty #localfood #eatlocal #yum

It's hard to believe our Close of Service Conference has come and gone already. Even though I still have days that drag on, some days I can't figure out where the time went. I think we all have those moment we wish we could freeze time and stay just a little bit longer and this is definitely one of those moments for me. Even though life must go on and we will all go our separate ways all too soon, I will always remember these moments. I couldn't have asked for a better group to learn and grow with ❤️❤️

A MESSAGE FROM
U.S. REPRESENTATIVE TULSI GABBARD
IN CELEBRATION OF THE
2017 KAUAʻI INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE CELEBRATION
"Nothing is more important to me, and nothing was more important to our founding fathers, than freedom of religion. Our nation was founded by people fleeing religious persecution, risking everything to find a place to be free to worship as they chose or not to worship at all. This freedom is enshrined in our constitution, in our Bill of Rights, which every member of Congress takes an oath to protect, and which so many heroes have given their lives to defend. The recognition of each individual’s free will and our commitment to individual freedom is the essence of what it means to be an American.

Whether we’re Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Atheists, Buddhists, Agnostic, or anything else, each of us shares the same goal for peace in our world, the same desire to keep our loved ones safe from harm, and the same hope for a better future for our children. As we join hands with people around the world on Peace Day and take on the many challenges that we face, let us bring the light found in the aloha spirit, rather than pouring fuel on the fire of darkness, divisiveness, and hatred. Let us show respect and love for everyone, irrespective of religion, race, gender, or any other external difference. Let us confront hatred with love, bigotry with aloha, fear with truth. Let us truly live aloha in our actions, in our words, and in our hearts.
With aloha,
Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard
Serving the People of Hawaii's 2nd District"
Presented on this 17th day of September .

Kauai's International Day of Peace was a great success last Sunday. Almost 200 gathered at various times. Cindy Combs played beautiful Hawaiian Slack Key guitar to help set the stage for a peaceful happy event. We then introduced our beautiful dove Mālie (deep calm) who was blessed by Aunty Hanaka'ulani Montgomery. Mālie was crafted from 1,000 golden cranes which people all over the island of Kaua'i made peace prayers over. She is a visible representation of that love and caring and desire for peace we all have.
