This relationship had a rocky beginning.
When Pax was 6 months old, he bit Kika on her 9 year old face.
I was horrified. Just like that, I was ready to get rid of him.
Steve suggested a more final ending in the guise of a hunting accident.
Kika, though, was more forgiving.
As Steve stitched her eyebrow with liquid band-aid--
Kika pleaded Pax’s case.
We gave Pax a chance and kept him.
I wondered though if I could ever truly love him despite my lack of trust.
I cared for him with the consistency and discipline necessary to keep safety in place. We cautioned visitors.
We didn’t make ourselves vulnerable to him in the same way.
It has been 10 years since that incident and I have since learned that love involves risks.
I have learned that sometimes we can get hurt by relationships, but that the key is to forgive.
I have also learned to work on keeping practices in place so that future hurts are avoided.
Maybe my girls have already learned that love, at times comes with pain.
I just hope that they also know that it isn't
love if you have to don body armor.
