A while ago I machined these pistons for the BMW e30 M3 S14B23 engine. Readily available pistons for the S14B23 come either as 13.5 or 8.5 compression ratio. The customer from Florida wanted 11.0 compression pistons for a mild performance rebuild. The domes were machined to meet customer's needs. Before and after of the Nissan Skyline R32 RB26 engine. The engine suffered a massive rod bearing failure. Cleaning the pan was tricky due to the front differential. This is THE most important step to preparing any SR20 engine. I made this fixture years ago using an old lifter and a dial indicator. After a valve job the valve tip heights will vary. This causes the rocker to lay 'angled/crooked' on the valve tips. This can cause abnormal rocker pad/lobe wear and thrown rockers. I measure valve tip height and grind them to be within .0010in difference. The final adjustment can be done with the shims. I don't use rocker arm stoppers and can rev to 8000rpm, of course, with proper valve springs. Made this tool for clamping IHI compressor housings for lathe work. Before I would clamp just the housing by about 2mm step in a three-jaw chuck. High spindle speed was not an option and chatter also present. I made this fixture from a 2.5in bar of 6061 Al. Two step manual lathe operation. The compressor seal plate was measured with a Tessa three-point internal micrometer and the centering boss made with precise slip fit. Hindsight, I should have made it with a shrink fit, heated up the seal plate, and installed it since it will never come off. Third operation was manual mill for drilling and tapping M6-1.0 threads. I installed lock washers under class 10.9 bolts. Normally a turbo doesn't spin or vibrate. Now I can really spin the comp housing for boring operation and modifications. Last few pictures show an aluminum ring press-fit onto the inlet. The housing will be machined with a radius, blending the insert with the OEM casting to create a 3 inch velocity stack on the intake. We'll see if it's worth any performance on the dyno. Received a set of brand new set of billet camshafts from a customer for his 2013 STI engine. One camshaft was binding in the cylinder head. Journal measuring revealed .0005-.0007in larger journals and .0070in runout, aka bent cam. Contacted the manufacturer and they replaced it. Lesson: if you don't check, you don't know. My friend is running this e30 M3 at Road America. I helped with the engine build and my oil pump drive and forged piston design is in this thing. Another SR20 block ready for assembly. This engine suffered a broken ring land on piston #2 and upon disassembly and inspection, rod bearings on #3 were about to spin. Luckily crank was not damaged. +0.5mm overbore for custom coated pistons, Manley forged rods, ACL Race bearings, and ARP fasteners will make for one reliable engine. Block was bore and honed with a torque plate. Note these custom forged pistons made using a strutted forging. This allows for narrow pin boss spacing and 2.000in, lightweight pins, while reducing overall piston weight and increased rigidity compared to the "typical" offerings for this engine. Sent out this Subaru rotating assembly kit to a customer in New Mexico who is building a Lola T70 Mk2 spider kit car with a Subaru EJ22T closed block and EJ205 heads. This is a EJ257 79mm crankshaft modified to fit EJ22T block and rebalanced. Manley rods were weight-matched, rod bearing clearances set, and rod bolts tightened using a stretch gauge. The pistons are our custom design in 97.5mm bore and correct compression height for 79mm stroke crankshaft. This makes the engine 2360cc displacement. Piston forging was selected to have a tight fit on the pin end. Pistons also machined with lateral gas ports in the top ring. We use 2.000in tool-steel pins. Pistons from a Lotus twin cam Formula B engine. Original engine build had special features where leakdown is crap and several pistons hit the head. Luckily neither the pistons or the head had any major damage or closed up the top ring groove and pistons can be reused. Pistons were blasted for inspection purposes. Dome angle was increased from 45 to 50 degrees so piston don't hit the head. Also, .037in was machined off the dome in a lathe using a ring groove chuck to lower compression from 13.7 to 13.0 since customer doesn't run very high octane race fuel; in the low 100's.
