Super Troopers 2 (2018)
When Super Troopers (2001) was released in theaters, this modest movie from the little-known comedy and filmmaking team Broken Lizard was a footnote at the box office. As comedians, Broken Lizard’s members are dorky and likable, but they don’t have a lot of charisma or personality. They aren’t very malleable either, as if five employees at Best Buy got together during coffee break and decided to form a community theater group. Yet the movie’s cheesy, laid-back vibe struck a chord with DVD viewers, who elevated Super Troopers to fabled cult classic status shared by Zoolander, Bad Santa, and Anchorman. Super Troopers 2, a crowdfunded sequel, finds the Lizards in typical silly form. There isn’t much of a script: after an on-duty incident that resulted in the death of, yes, Fred Savage, the first movie’s five Vermont State Troopers are fired from the Spurbury Police Department and working in construction until the long-suffering Captain O’Hagan (a hilarious Brian Cox) gives them a shot at redemption. At the request of Vermont Governor Jessman (Lynda Carter, also reprising her role), the boys will set up a police department in an area where the U.S.-Canadian border will be redrawn. Despite a “plot” involving drug smuggling, the movie is really just a random collection of Canadian culture-clash jokes and fratboy humor. Even by lowered standards, the main characters are almost interchangeable, though Kevin Heffernan, as the radio operator on whom other troopers often play pranks, blows his temper amusingly as if he were playing Vincent D’Onofrio’s son.
