5. St John's May Ball - £175
John's May Ball is usually on the Tuesday of May week, same night as Downing and Queens/Caius (both biannual balls). John's May Ball is one of the most hyped May Balls in Cambridge, rumoured to be the 4th best party in the world. Shoutout to @daisy_ih for getting me a ticket.
St John's May Ball was an incredible experience. The first half was insane! The fireworks/light show was second to none and the design and layout of the ball (apart from the one way system) was impressive.
The food options included: falafel, candy floss and popcorn, brownies, gelato, mac and cheese, coffee, fish finger sandwiches, cupcakes, slushies, meringues, burgers, steak and chips, smoked salmon, pizza, pulled pork and breakfast items. The queues were quite long at the start of the Ball but were non-existent during the second half.
You definitely get your money's worth with the amount of alcohol at the ball, there were randomly placed punts filled with drinks. I was also impressed by the non-alcoholic options readily available. Usually I have to ask the drinks people to make it for me which is a bit long for man.
The music was fab. @zakabelmusic bossed it and so did some of the djs.👌🏾👌🏾
One thing that was lacking was a variety of things to do during the Ball. There were a few rides but apart from that it didn't seem like there was much to do. I got bored around 2am and didn't wait for the survivors' photo.
But John's May Ball is definitely worth the experience. It's on another scale, mostly because of the space they have to host the ball and how grand everything is.
