Aureus Septimius Severus
Rome 201 BC.
Obverse-SEVERVS AVG PART MAX
FVNDATOR PACIS-The founder of the world. The legend on the gold and silver coins of the emperor Septimius Severus minted in Rome in 200-201 AD after a partial victory over Parthia.
In 197 CE, Emperor Septimius Sever attacked Parthia and conquered the capital of Parthia-Ctesiphon. In Ctesiphon, Septimus Severus gave his soldiers complete freedom of action, and they began to rob the city with all cruelty. Dion Cassius writes that 100,000 women and children Was sold into slavery, and a large number of treasures were taken from the city.
Septimius Severus was unable to conquer the city of Khatra, which was opposed even to the emperor Trajan himself, but still the northern half of Mesopotamia was reintegrated to the Roman Empire.
And in honor of this victory, Septimus Severus took the title of PARTHICVS MAXIMVS-which we see on the obverse of this beautiful gold coin.
